Prof. Gilbert Bukenya Launches Tree Planting to Support Landslide Survivors in Bunambutye, Bulambuli

On Wednesday, Biara Emmanuel Wepukhulu, who wants to become the Member of Parliament for Bulambuli County under the NRM party, hosted former Vice President of Uganda, Professor Gilbert Bukenya, at his home in Buyaga Town Council. The event brought together leaders from Bulambuli and the Bugisu region to show support for families affected by landslides and to take action to protect the environment.

A major activity during the day was tree planting at the Bunambutye Resettlement Camp. This camp is where many people now live after being displaced by deadly landslides in Bududa and Bulambuli. The area is dry and has been badly affected by environmental damage. Planting trees will help improve the soil, bring shade, and support nature’s recovery.

Children in the camp are already helping with this effort. They have planted over 200 trees. However, they face challenges. Thirteen-year-old Ever Namataka said, “Trees are withering and end up dying because all our fellow children residing in Phase II do not have readily available water.” Her message shows how important it is to provide clean and steady water to keep the trees alive and healthy.

The event also showed how partnerships can help people in need. The Rotary Club donated relief items worth Shs100 million to the landslide survivors, while the Welsh government gave items worth Shs49 million. These donations are making a real difference in the lives of the affected families.

Another tree planting activity was held at Nabongo Secondary School, where Emmanuel Wepukhulu went to school and completed his UCE. This shows the importance of involving schools and communities in protecting the environment and teaching young people about conservation.

In the evening, Emmanuel hosted a dinner at his home with supporters from the NRM party. It was a time to reflect on the day’s success and to build unity among the people who want to see positive change in their community.

At the dinner, Professor Bukenya gave his full support to Emmanuel Wepukhulu’s plans to run for parliament. In front of many excited supporters, he praised Emmanuel as a young leader with a clear vision and strong commitment to his people. He encouraged the people of Bulambuli to support him, saying the country needs more leaders like him.
