Ugandan long-distance star Joshua Cheptegei has confirmed his participation in the Tokyo Marathon on March 2, marking his debut in the prestigious race. The three-time world champion is currently training in Kapchorwa under Dutch coach Addy Ruiter, aiming to take on elite competition from Kenya, Ethiopia, and beyond.
In an exclusive with Uganda Radio Network, Cheptegei revealed his plan to run two marathons this year, with the second race yet to be confirmed. “I believe two marathons are enough for this year since I just transitioned from track,” he explained.
Among his Tokyo rivals will be Kenya’s Benard Koech, Ethiopia’s Yohei Ikada, and Dutch runner Abdi Nagaye. Coach Ruiter highlights Cheptegei’s progress in a specialized marathon training program, emphasizing his growing fitness levels.
Meanwhile, Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) General Secretary Beatrice Ayikoru is urging elite track runners to embrace marathon racing and extend their careers rather than retiring early.
Cheptegei’s marathon transition is eagerly watched as he seeks to cement his dominance beyond the track.
