“The Pain Of Losing My Daughter & Driver & Seeing My Own Blood Flow, Is A Scar I Carry Every Day.” Gen. Katumba Wamala Opens Up On The Murder Attempt That Changed His Life Forever

Uganda’s Minister of Works and Transport, Gen. Edward Katumba Wamala, has spoken candidly about the 2021 assassination attempt that nearly claimed his life, calling it the most terrifying ordeal he has ever endured—even more harrowing than his experiences on the battlefield.

Speaking at a recent public event, Gen. Katumba reflected emotionally on the ambush that took place on June 1, 2021, in Kampala. Unknown assailants opened fire on his vehicle in broad daylight, riddling it with bullets in a brazen attack that stunned the nation.

The assault claimed the lives of his daughter, Brenda Nantongo, and his driver, Haruna Kayondo—both of whom he described as deeply cherished. Their deaths sent shockwaves across Uganda and left Gen. Katumba with emotional scars that still linger.

“I’ve faced bullets in war zones many times, but nothing compares to that day. Watching my daughter and driver die beside me, and seeing my own blood—it’s a pain I carry every day,” he said, visibly emotional.

The retired general, highly regarded for his military service, believes the attack was a deliberate attempt on his life. Without naming anyone, he suggested that the ambush was orchestrated by individuals who viewed him as a threat to their interests.

“This wasn’t just random violence. It was a well-organized attempt to eliminate me by people who believed my existence stood in their way,” he stated.

Following the attack, security forces launched a nationwide manhunt, arresting several suspects who were later brought to court. However, questions remain about who masterminded the assault and the motives behind it.

Gen. Katumba’s survival has been widely seen as a symbol of resilience and fortitude. His testimony has reignited public debate around the security of political figures in Uganda and the rise in targeted attacks against them.
