Calvin Echodu Returns to a Hero’s Welcome, Crowds Celebrate in Soroti
A massive crowd gathered at Soroti Sports Ground on Saturday to welcome Calvin Echodu in a grand homecoming event that turned into a powerful show of unity and hope. What started as a joyful celebration soon became a defining moment that many say could shift the direction of Eastern Uganda’s future.
Echodu, who recently announced his intention to run for the position of NRM Vice Chairperson for Eastern Uganda, delivered a heartfelt and stirring speech that deeply connected with the audience. His words, filled with emotion and sincerity, drew loud applause and cheers from the crowd.
“I know some of you came here hungry. I know you left home without breakfast or lunch,” he said as he opened his remarks, showing that he truly understands the hardships many people in the region face daily.
“But I’m here to give you hope. God has not forgotten this country, and our region is part of His plan. President Museveni is working to change Uganda, and we must play our part too,” Echodu added.
He called on the people to stop waiting and start taking action, saying that the era of “empty promises” should come to an end.
“We can’t keep pretending. The time for waiting is over. Now is the time to act and to speak through action,” he declared, as the audience erupted in applause.
Echodu also spoke about the importance of unity. He emphasized that lasting change could only come when communities across Eastern Uganda and beyond join hands.
“We are tired of struggling. We are tired of unemployment and not being able to take care of our families. But we can change our story—if we stand together,” he said. To ensure his message reached everyone, Echodu alternated between English and local languages during his speech.
He strongly condemned corruption and promised a new style of leadership—one rooted in truth, service, and the needs of the people.
“We need to move away from leadership that makes excuses while our people suffer. That era must end now,” he said, again receiving strong support from the crowd.
The event drew a wide variety of groups from the region, including religious and cultural leaders, youth associations, women’s savings groups, and local government officials. Organizers described it as one of the largest public gatherings in Eastern Uganda in recent times. Many people believe it could be the beginning of a political shift as the 2026 general elections approach.
In a gesture that was both generous and thoughtful, Echodu donated Shs500,000 to each of 13 village savings groups from Soroti City East and West. He also gave Shs4 million each to two boda boda associations. While handing over the support, he encouraged them with this message:
“Be the face of change. Let’s work with the President. Together, we can build a Uganda that we are proud to live in.”
Throughout the event, Echodu reaffirmed his support for President Museveni’s development goals. With his growing influence and strong message, many now see him as a rising force in the NRM, especially in Eastern Uganda. As one young attendee put it, “Change is in the air.”
With the 2026 elections drawing closer and competition for key party positions heating up, Calvin Echodu’s homecoming is turning out to be more than just a welcome. It could be the spark that sets off a fresh wave of energy and transformation in the East.
