Intending Parliamentary Commissioner Kaluya visits jailed Kivumbi

Kigulu South MP elect Hon. Andrew Kiiza Kaluya on Monday paid a visit to jailed National Unity Platform party Deputy President Hon. Muwanga Kivumbi at Kitalya mini-max prison. The visit was a brotherly gesture and meant to guarantee solidarity from the people of Eastern Uganda, where Kaluya serves as the mobilization secretary.

During the visit, Kaluya encountered several obstacles at Kitalya and he was nearly blocked from accessing the jailbird but his charisma and resilience enabled him to overcome all this.

He was able to have an in depth conversation with the Butambala County MP Muwanga Kivumbi. The duo discussed a lot surrounding the struggle for liberation, rights of Ugandans and the fate of all political prisoners who have been condemned at this place since 2021. The group that includes Yasin Ssekitoleko alias Machete was remanded to Kitalya mini max prison via the court martial that was later quashed by the Supreme Court and now their fate hangs by a thread with no particular court taking responsibility for them.

In the aftermath of the visit, Hon. Kaluya expressed his fury with the judicial system over the snail paced manner in which the issue of NUP political prisoners has been handled.

“It is hard to believe that these comrades have been in jail for six years now. They are on remand and they’ve not been convicted to serve,” he remarked. “This is a direct abuse of their rights. They should have got mandatory bail upon serving their first six months but look where we are now, it’s six full years,” he added.

The senior legislator who is currently NUP’s favorable candidate for the parliamentary commission slot, says once he takes oath in May this year, he will advocate for rights of all Ugandans facing unjust detention in prisons and also push for the accountability of those who were forcefully disappeared like John Bosco Kibalama.
