Authorities in Thailand are said to have detained Mariam following investigations into suspected illegal activities involving the exploitation of foreign nationals in the country’s sex trade. The arrest has sparked widespread discussion online and within Ugandan communities about the growing problem of human trafficking and labor exploitation involving young women seeking opportunities overseas.
According to information circulating in reports, Mariam had allegedly been recruiting young Ugandan women by promising them better job prospects and improved living conditions in Thailand. However, once the women arrived in the country, the situation reportedly turned drastically different from what they had been promised.
Sources claim that after arriving in Thailand, the women’s passports were allegedly confiscated, leaving them with limited freedom of movement and few options to return home. The women were then reportedly forced to engage in prostitution as a means of repaying the money that had been spent to facilitate their travel and relocation.
Reports further indicate that Mariam allegedly invested approximately UGX 6 million in facilitating travel and related arrangements for each recruit. However, once in Thailand, the women were reportedly required to repay a much larger amount — said to be about UGX 36 million — creating a debt that was difficult for many to clear.

The case has also drawn public attention because Mariam is reportedly linked to Ugandan singer Bobby Lash, a member of the popular B2C music group. Some reports claim that Mariam had been sending money to the singer to support his lifestyle, although authorities have not publicly confirmed whether the musician has any involvement in the alleged activities.
Law enforcement agencies in Thailand are expected to continue investigating the case to determine the full scope of the alleged network and whether additional individuals may have been involved in recruiting or managing the women.
Meanwhile, the incident has raised renewed concern among anti-trafficking advocates in Uganda. Experts warn that many young people are increasingly vulnerable to exploitation as they search for employment opportunities abroad. Traffickers often use promises of high-paying jobs, modeling contracts, or hospitality work to lure victims before subjecting them to exploitative conditions.
Ugandan authorities and civil society organizations have repeatedly cautioned citizens to verify overseas job offers through official channels and to avoid travel arrangements made by unverified agents. They also encourage victims of trafficking or exploitation to seek help from embassies, local authorities, or international support organizations.
As investigations continue, officials are expected to release more information about the case, including details regarding the victims involved and potential legal proceedings against those responsible.
The case highlights the ongoing global challenge of combating human trafficking and protecting vulnerable individuals from exploitation, particularly among migrants seeking economic opportunities abroad.
