Inside Lydia Babirye’s Mysterious Kidnap And Death: Suspect Claims She Happily Died While Enjoying Sex With Him
The investigation into the mysterious death of Lydia Babirye, the daughter of former Buganda Katikkiro Engineer John Baptist Walusimbi, has taken a dramatic new turn after the prime suspect, Abubakar Ntege, reportedly denied allegations that he abducted and murdered her, instead offering investigators a different account of the events surrounding her death.
On Wednesday, a team of special homicide investigators, operating under tight security, escorted Ntege to his residence in Kiteredde Village, Katabi Town Council in Wakiso District, where Babirye’s body was recovered. The visit formed part of ongoing efforts to reconstruct the sequence of events and verify statements made during the investigation.
According to sources familiar with the inquiry, investigators used the scene visit to establish whether Ntege’s version of events was consistent with physical evidence collected at the residence and to clarify circumstances surrounding allegations that he had compelled Babirye to sign documents connected to her reported death.
Police sources who spoke on condition of anonymity claimed that during questioning, Ntege told investigators that he and Babirye had allegedly maintained a secret romantic relationship for nearly five years. He reportedly stated that the two frequently met at his residence and that Babirye regularly visited him in private.
According to the same sources, Ntege claimed the pair’s relationship had become deeply personal despite their shared clan affiliation, a circumstance regarded as taboo under Kiganda cultural traditions, where members of the same clan are generally considered relatives and are prohibited from entering romantic relationships.
Ntege allegedly told investigators that on the day Babirye died, the two were engaged in consensual sexual activity when she suddenly became unwell and requested drinking water. He reportedly said that after taking the water, her condition deteriorated rapidly before she later died inside the house.
Investigators, however, are said to have challenged this explanation, with sources indicating that officers questioned several inconsistencies and sought additional clarification. Despite the questioning, Ntege reportedly maintained that his account accurately described what had occurred.
The investigation became even more complicated when detectives confronted Ntege over messages allegedly sent to Babirye’s family claiming that she had been kidnapped and demanding UGX 19 million in ransom for her release.
According to police sources, investigators questioned why such messages would have been sent if Babirye had already died from a medical emergency as he claimed.
In response, Ntege reportedly stated that he panicked after realizing Babirye had died. He allegedly told investigators that his initial intention had been to dress her body and transport her to hospital but abandoned the plan after fearing that her influential family would not believe his explanation and would instead accuse him of intentionally causing her death.
He is said to have admitted that he then devised what investigators describe as a false kidnapping narrative in an effort to divert suspicion. As part of that alleged plan, he reportedly sent a direct message to Babirye’s daughter claiming responsibility for kidnapping her mother while demanding UGX 19 million in exchange for her release.
Sources familiar with the investigation further claim that when detectives asked what he intended to do with the ransom money if it had been paid, Ntege allegedly replied that he planned to flee Uganda and use the funds to establish a new life elsewhere rather than face possible criminal prosecution.
Another key area of interest for investigators has been a freshly dug pit reportedly discovered behind Ntege’s residence. According to police sources, detectives questioned him about the purpose of the excavation because of its size and location.
Ntege allegedly admitted that he had dug the hole with the intention of burying Babirye’s body there after decomposition had begun and the remains had started producing an unpleasant odor. Investigators are continuing to examine whether physical evidence at the scene supports or contradicts that explanation.
The same sources also claim that Ntege admitted performing traditional cleansing rituals before his arrest because he believed Babirye’s spirit was haunting him following her death.
Despite these admissions, forensic investigators are said to be treating the suspect’s statements cautiously. Police sources indicate that preliminary observations of Babirye’s body reportedly revealed no obvious signs of physical struggle or visible external injuries that could immediately explain the cause of death.
Authorities have therefore assigned forensic specialists to conduct detailed examinations aimed at establishing the precise medical cause of death. The forensic findings are expected to play a central role in determining whether Babirye died from natural causes, an underlying medical condition, accidental circumstances, or any criminal act.
The reconstruction exercise at Kiteredde Village forms part of broader efforts by homicide investigators to piece together the final hours of Babirye’s life using witness testimony, digital evidence, forensic analysis, and scene examination.
As the investigation continues, law enforcement officials have yet to publicly announce definitive conclusions regarding the exact cause of death or any additional charges that may arise from the evidence gathered.
The case has attracted significant public attention because of the victim’s prominent family background and the unusual circumstances surrounding the alleged ransom demand, the recovery of the body, and the evolving explanations provided by the prime suspect.
For now, investigators continue to analyze forensic results and corroborate witness accounts before reaching final conclusions. Until that process is complete, many of the claims made by the suspect remain unverified and are being treated as part of an active criminal investigation.
