Inside Sources: Anita Among Pleads To M7 To Allow Her Travel Abroad For Treatment, Asks for Forgiveness, Appeals Over CEC Position and Seized Assets During State House Meeting
KAMPALA — Former Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among held a private meeting with President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni on June 7, where she reportedly appealed for forgiveness, sought to retain her position on the National Resistance Movement’s Central Executive Committee (CEC), and requested the return of property seized during ongoing corruption investigations, according to sources familiar with the discussions.
The brief but closely watched encounter came against the backdrop of widening investigations into Among’s wealth, asset declarations and conduct while in public office. The probes have attracted national attention following a series of searches on properties associated with the former Speaker and the seizure of several high-value assets.
According to sources, Among had sought an audience with President Museveni for some time before eventually securing the meeting at State House. During their discussion, she is said to have expressed regret over any mistakes she may have made while serving as Speaker and asked the President for forgiveness.
Sources further alleged that Among appealed to Museveni not to strip her of her position on the ruling party’s Central Executive Committee, arguing that she wished to remain part of the party’s top decision-making organ despite the investigations surrounding her.
The same sources claimed that she also asked the President to allow her to travel abroad for medical treatment, citing diabetes and high blood pressure as health concerns requiring specialized care outside the country.
According to people familiar with the meeting, Museveni did not make any commitments on either request and instead emphasized that ongoing investigations should be allowed to run their full course before any decisions are taken.

“The IGG haven’t finished their report,” Museveni reportedly told Among.
“Let us wait for them to complete it,” he reportedly added.
The President’s reported response underscored what sources described as his position that the findings of the Inspectorate of Government (IGG) and the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) would guide any future decisions regarding Among’s political and legal standing.
Among also reportedly raised concerns about vehicles and other property seized during recent security operations. According to sources, she maintained that some of the assets had been acquired through proceeds from her private business ventures rather than public funds and requested that they be returned.
However, Museveni is said to have advised her to wait until investigators complete their work so that all outstanding issues could be addressed comprehensively.
Sources indicated that the President remained noncommittal and declined to intervene while the investigations are still underway.
The meeting comes amid an expanding probe into allegations of corruption, illicit enrichment and discrepancies in asset declarations that has seen investigators search residences linked to Among in Nakasero, Kigo and Bukedea.
Recent operations reportedly resulted in the impounding of luxury vehicles, including a Rolls-Royce and a Range Rover, while documents and electronic devices recovered during the searches are undergoing forensic examination as part of the ongoing inquiries.
Security presence around some of Among’s properties has also remained heightened. Sources indicated that her Nakasero residence continues to be monitored by security personnel, including members of specialized units, as investigators pursue additional leads.
The former Speaker, once regarded as one of the most influential figures within Uganda’s political establishment, has since been succeeded by Jacob Oboth Oboth after withdrawing from the race for Speaker of the 12th Parliament amid mounting scrutiny.
Observers say the June 7 meeting demonstrates the significance of the investigations and the extent to which their outcome could shape Among’s future within both government and the ruling party.

For now, according to sources familiar with the discussions, Museveni’s position remains that no definitive action should be taken until the Inspectorate of Government and other investigative agencies conclude their work and present their final findings.
Neither State House nor Among had publicly commented on the specific details of the reported requests at the time of writing.
