How Blood, Death And Political Violence Defined NRM Primaries Across Uganda

As the National Resistance Movement (NRM) went to the polls today, July 17, 2025, fear and uncertainty hang heavy in the air—especially in parts of Lwengo District, where violence has already left people injured before voting even begins.

Three people who identify as supporters of Ibrahim Kitatta, a parliamentary aspirant in Lwengo, are nursing injuries after clashes broke out on July 14.

They were caught up in chaos during a campaign rally that turned violent. Images from the scene show the victims with bruised faces, bandaged heads, and torn clothing—clear signs of the growing tension surrounding this year’s NRM primaries.

Residents say the political environment has become toxic, with candidates accusing each other of intimidation, bribery, and even using security forces to suppress rivals. Some voters now fear showing support for their preferred candidates openly, worried they might face attacks.

“I just wanted to attend the rally and listen, but I ended up running for my life,” said one of the injured supporters. “All I care about is peace, but politics is tearing our community apart.”

As the ruling party chooses its parliamentary flagbearers for the 2026 general elections, concerns about safety, fairness, and transparency remain high.

While the NRM Electoral Commission insists everything is in place for a smooth vote, the violence in places like Lwengo tells a different story.

Community leaders and civil society groups are calling for calm. They urge candidates to compete respectfully and encourage their supporters to avoid violence.

With polling stations now open, Uganda watches closely. For many, today is not just about choosing leaders—it’s a test of whether democracy within the NRM can be peaceful, fair, and inclusive.
