Here’s Why Kabaka Rejected Museveni’s Car Gifts – Failed To Attend Kololo Event

The Minister of Gender, Labour and Social Development, Betty Amongi, has said that the government gave Buganda Kingdom money instead of two vehicles that President Museveni had planned to offer to Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II.

Speaking to journalists at Kololo ceremonial grounds, Amongi said the decision followed talks with Buganda Kingdom officials, including the Katikkiro, Charles Peter Mayiga. She said the kingdom asked for money, giving cultural reasons.

Earlier, President Museveni had given vehicles to 15 other cultural leaders. Each received a Toyota Land Cruiser V8 and a Toyota Hilux, with the full package worth about Shs 800 million.

These were meant to support the leaders with transport for both the cultural head and the chief administrator.

The Kabaka of Buganda did not receive any of the vehicles, which led to questions from the public. Amongi said this was not an act of exclusion, but an agreement with the kingdom based on its traditions.

“I personally visited the Katikkiro and we agreed that the government would provide money instead of cars,” she said. “They explained that in Buganda culture, it is the subjects who provide for their king, including transport.”

Amongi said the government calculated the total amount and gave the kingdom a cheque. This included the value of the vehicles and earlier agreed allowances that had not been paid.

“We gave them the cheque, and they know how to manage and use the money in line with their customs,” she said.

She also played an audio clip during the press briefing to support her explanation.
