Boycott Hits Sironko NRM Primaries as Women Leaders Cry Foul
Political tension is mounting in Sironko District after several women leaders boycotted the NRM Woman MP primaries, leaving Aisha Nabulo Lumolo—the daughter of NRM district chairman Haji Lumolo—as the only candidate in the race. The boycott has sparked criticism over fairness, with claims that the contest was skewed to favor Lumolo’s daughter.
The move has raised concerns about internal democracy within the ruling party. Many women leaders argue that the electoral process was compromised by Haji Lumolo’s influence, making it difficult for other candidates to compete on equal footing.
In response, Hon. Florence Nambozo Mayoga, the current Woman MP and a government minister, has announced she will run as an independent candidate, as she did in the 2021 elections. Her decision has been welcomed by a growing number of voters who say they no longer trust the party’s internal processes.
This discontent is not new. Some residents of Budadiri have expressed longstanding unease over Haji Lumolo’s leadership, including past controversies surrounding his business dealings. These issues have added to the current frustration among sections of the community.
The unfolding situation underscores deeper divisions within the NRM in Sironko. Hon. Nambozo’s independent bid is seen by supporters as a stand for accountability and fairness. Her campaign is expected to focus on her strong record in education, women’s rights, and community development.
As the district heads into a critical electoral season, the outcome of this race is likely to shape both Sironko’s future representation and the NRM’s standing in the region.
