Muhoozi Quits The Army To Become President – His Latest Message Raises Questions

Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) General Muhoozi Kainerugaba has sparked fresh speculation about his political future after announcing plans to step down from the military position he described as one given to him by God.

In a statement posted on X on Friday morning, November 6, 2026, Muhoozi said he was looking forward to handing over the office to another qualified Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) officer.

He also revealed that he intends to dedicate his life to Jesus Christ, raising questions about whether his anticipated departure from military leadership could pave the way for a more direct involvement in civilian politics.

Although Muhoozi did not explicitly announce a presidential bid or declare that he was joining active politics, his statement has attracted attention because of his growing political profile and the activities of the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), a pressure group associated with his political ambitions.

The development comes amid growing speculation about the possibility of Muhoozi seeking the country’s top political office in the 2031 general elections.

PLU supporters have previously expressed support for his presidential ambitions, with political mobilisation activities already associated with the campaign.

Under Uganda’s legal framework, serving members of the armed forces face restrictions on partisan political participation. The UPDF Act also provides for resignation or retirement from military service for officers seeking elective political office.

However, announcing an intention to relinquish the CDF position does not automatically amount to formal retirement from the UPDF or an official declaration of political ambitions.

Muhoozi’s statement has therefore raised questions about whether Uganda could be witnessing the beginning of a transition from military leadership to civilian political engagement.

For now, the General has not publicly confirmed whether he intends to contest for the presidency or pursue another political role.
