Singer Eddy Kenzo Reveals Why He Distanced Himself from Bobi Wine and NUP
Award-winning singer and Uganda National Musicians Federation (UNMF) president Eddy Kenzo has finally broken his silence about his controversial decision to part ways with opposition leader Bobi Wine and the National Unity Platform (NUP).
In a candid YouTube interview, Kenzo laid bare the reasons behind his departure, revealing that his choice was driven by personal survival, responsibility, and a desire to uplift Uganda’s creative industry—not politics.
Kenzo, one of Uganda’s most celebrated musical exports, made it clear that aligning himself with Bobi Wine’s political movement offers him no tangible benefit, either financially or professionally. While his decision has stirred debate across the political and entertainment spheres, the “Sitya Loss” singer stood firm, saying he has no regrets.
“If I were to support him, in which position would I be? Where would I be eating?” he questioned. “I have children, a wife, and a family to take care of. If I join him, which office would I occupy? Why doesn’t he leave his seat for me and support me? That’s when you know it’s for him, not for me.”

Kenzo’s rhetorical questions highlighted a broader concern—one he says is rooted in practical reality rather than ideological allegiance. According to him, Bobi Wine’s political platform lacks a clear structure for creatives to thrive, something he believes the ruling government has done better in.
Museveni vs. Bobi Wine: Who Supports the Arts?
Drawing a comparison between Bobi Wine and President Yoweri Museveni, Kenzo praised the long-serving president for his open-door policy and engagement with the entertainment industry.
“President Museveni understands the concept. He calls and asks you to gather your peers so he can see how to help you,” Kenzo said. “I’ve never received such a message from Bobi Wine. I want to empower people around me so that I live in a good community.”
The singer credited Museveni for creating platforms that allow musicians and other creatives to thrive, claiming that his administration has made tangible efforts to support the sector. In contrast, he accused Bobi Wine of failing to nurture the very creatives who once stood by him during his early political struggles.
“We supported him but later realized we weren’t getting anything from it,” Kenzo explained. “It’s not about artists; it’s about him. The creatives joined his party, but he didn’t give them the cards.”

Kenzo alleged that a number of artists—including big names like Jose Chameleone, Patricko Mujjuko, Flavia Namulindwa, and Reign—were sidelined by NUP leadership and even denied party membership cards, despite showing unwavering support during the party’s formative years.
Mixed Reactions from the Public
Unsurprisingly, Kenzo’s remarks have sparked heated discussions online and within entertainment circles. While some fans and followers applauded his bravery and honesty, others were quick to accuse him of abandoning the opposition cause in favor of political convenience and personal gain.
Critics claim Kenzo is cozying up to the ruling government for favors, while supporters argue that he is simply choosing a path that allows him to better serve the music industry and secure his family’s future.
A Leader Focused on Unity, Not Division
Despite the backlash, Kenzo remains resolute in his mission as UNMF president. He emphasized that his top priority is to build a unified and empowered entertainment industry—one that collaborates with leaders who recognize the value of creative talent, regardless of their political affiliations.
“I’m not here to fight political battles,” Kenzo implied. “I’m here to serve the industry that raised me and to work with those who are willing to invest in it.”
As Uganda’s entertainment sector continues to evolve, Kenzo’s remarks open up a critical dialogue about the intersection between art, politics, and survival. While his decision to distance himself from Bobi Wine may be controversial, it’s also a stark reminder of the complex realities that artists face in a politically charged environment.
