Shocking!! Bobi Wine’s ‘Son’ Churchill Ssentamu Joins Central Youth MP Race After Receiving Shs 250M Campaign Funds From Speaker Anita Among

Makerere University Guild President Churchill Ssentamu, a nephew to opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine), has thrown himself into the national political arena after being officially nominated to contest for the Central Region Youth Member of Parliament seat ahead of the 2026 general elections.

Ssentamu, the 91st Guild President of Makerere University, shocked many when he submitted his nomination as an independent candidate — a bold move given his family’s deep entrenchment in the National Unity Platform (NUP), Uganda’s dominant opposition force.

At just 22, the political science student’s independent bid has stirred intense debate within political circles. His father, Fred Nyanzi Ssentamu, is NUP’s flagbearer for Kawempe South, while his uncle, Bobi Wine, is the party’s presidential candidate and a central figure in Uganda’s opposition politics.

But Churchill appears unmoved by the weight of his last name and determined to break away from the family’s political mold.

“Despite his close family’s link to the main opposition party, Churchill chose, yet again, to contest as an independent candidate,” confirmed a member of his campaign team.

His decision ends months of speculation following interviews where he hinted at a desire to take his politics beyond the Makerere campus and into the national arena.

Churchill’s political momentum began at Makerere University, where he stunned party loyalists earlier this year by capturing the guild presidency as an independent — humiliating candidates backed by both NUP and the ruling NRM.

He took office as Makerere’s 91st Guild President on March 21, 2025, while in his second year studying Social Sciences. His victory was narrow but symbolic — 3,459 votes against his rival’s 3,267 — a win widely interpreted as a youth rebellion against Uganda’s suffocating party politics.

The Central Region Youth MP seat, one of five youth representation positions in Parliament, is decided by an electoral college made up of district youth council delegates. Candidates must be aged between 18 and 30, making the contest a fierce battleground for Uganda’s emerging generation of politicians.

Churchill’s entry now guarantees a heated fight, potentially pitting him against party-backed aspirants from both the ruling NRM and his own family’s NUP.

Political analysts argue that his bid will be a litmus test of whether independent-minded youth can defy the grip of Uganda’s entrenched political machinery.

As the nephew of Bobi Wine and son of Fred Nyanzi, Churchill carries a name heavy with political power. Yet, his decision to run solo signals a direct challenge to Uganda’s culture of inherited political loyalty.

“I respect my family’s political work, but my candidacy is about youth representation, not party allegiance,” he reportedly told friends during a campus meeting.

With nominations now closed, the battle for the Central Youth MP seat is set to escalate. Churchill will lean on his campus-driven popularity, his reputation for defiance, and his image as a fresh, independent voice daring to confront Uganda’s partisan establishment.

Whether this gamble pays off or ends in political isolation remains uncertain — but one thing is undeniable: the Makerere Guild President is no longer just a student leader; he’s a rising disruptor on Uganda’s national political stage.
