Mystery and Grief in Mukono: Police Probe Death of Missing Activist Kibalama’s Wife
Police in Mukono District have launched investigations into the suspected homicide of Monicah Nabukeera Kibalama, the wife of missing political activist Johnbosco Kibalama, after her lifeless body was discovered in her bathroom on Monday morning under mysterious circumstances.
The tragic discovery has sent shockwaves through the local community and reignited national debate about safety, justice, and accountability—especially given the unresolved disappearance of her husband six years ago.
Opposition Leader Joel Ssenyonyi confirmed the heartbreaking incident, describing it as yet another dark moment for families of missing persons and victims of unexplained deaths in Uganda.
“Mrs. Monica Nabukenya Kibalama, wife to Johnbosco Kibalama who was abducted on June 3, 2019, has been found dead in her bathroom,” Ssenyonyi said.

According to police detectives from Mukono Central Division, the scene of the incident raised serious suspicion of foul play. Officers at the site reportedly noted inconsistencies that suggested more than a simple domestic accident. However, they emphasized that a postmortem examination would be critical in establishing the actual cause of death.
Relatives and neighbors painted a somber picture of Nabukeera, describing her as a “quiet but deeply troubled” woman who had never fully recovered from the trauma of her husband’s disappearance. One neighbor recounted that she often kept to herself, only leaving home to attend church or buy household items.
“She seemed to carry a heavy burden,” said a local resident. “Since her husband went missing, she was never the same.”

The case now joins a growing list of homicide investigations that have unsettled the country in recent months. Despite efforts by law enforcement agencies, many of these cases remain unresolved, fueling public frustration and calls for greater transparency in criminal investigations.
According to the Uganda Police Annual Crime Report (2024), more than 4,000 homicide cases were recorded across the nation last year—a worrying 9% increase compared to 2023. Authorities attribute the rise to a combination of domestic violence, land disputes, and targeted killings, though critics argue that deeper systemic failures are to blame.
Nabukeera’s husband, Johnbosco Kibalama, was allegedly abducted in June 2019 under still-unexplained circumstances. His whereabouts remain unknown, despite numerous appeals from opposition leaders, human rights organizations, and his family.
During a parliamentary session, Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja told legislators that Kibalama had been “arrested by state operatives,” though no official records or follow-up reports have ever been made public.
In contrast, UPDF Spokesperson Brig. Felix Kulayigye claimed last year that Kibalama was “hiding in some country,” but he declined to specify which one—a statement that further deepened public skepticism.
As investigators comb through evidence from Nabukeera’s home, political and civic leaders are urging the authorities to handle the matter with urgency and transparency.
“This family has endured so much pain and uncertainty,” Ssenyonyi lamented. “May her soul rest in peace, and may justice one day be served.”
For now, Mukono remains gripped by sorrow, and the haunting question persists: what really happened to Monicah Nabukeera Kibalama, and will the truth about the Kibalama family tragedy ever come to light?
