“My Father Is A General , No One Will Stop My Event When I Have SFC Security” NRM Mak Guild Aspirant Hannah Karema Trashes University Dean

Hannah Karema, one of the leading contenders in the ongoing Makerere University guild presidential race, has sparked fresh controversy after openly defying a university directive banning all physical campaign activities.

The former beauty queen, Hannah Karema, dismissed the April 7 communication from the Office of the Dean of Students, insisting that her planned campaign event in Kikoni would proceed as scheduled despite the ban.

Makerere University had earlier announced that all guild campaign activities must be conducted virtually in accordance with the Students’ Guild Statute, 2022. The directive was issued amid rising tensions between rival camps and warnings of potential violence linked to planned physical rallies.

However, Karema has rejected the restrictions, describing them as unfair and impractical for candidates seeking to connect with students on the ground. She maintained that her campaign event, dubbed “Retake yebinyanya nyanya,” is still on course and will take place at Nalika Lane, one of the hotspots for student political activity in Kikoni.

Karema further claimed that she has the backing of influential figures who support her decision to proceed with the event. Among those she mentioned is State Minister for Youth and Children Affairs, Balaam Barugahara, whom she described as a close ally.

She also referenced popular Ugandan musician Eddy Kenzo, suggesting that he supports her move and would not stand in the way of the planned gathering. Karema indicated that such endorsements reinforce her confidence in going ahead with the event, despite warnings from university authorities.

In addition, Karema pointed to her strong support base and argued that physical engagement is a critical part of her campaign strategy. She suggested that limiting campaigns to online platforms disadvantages candidates who rely on direct interaction with students, particularly those based in and around campus.

Her remarks have intensified debate among students and observers, with some expressing concern that her defiance could escalate tensions in an already heated race. Others, however, view her stance as a bold challenge to what they perceive as overly restrictive regulations.

Karema, who is also known as the daughter of Henry Tumukunde, has positioned herself as a strong and independent candidate willing to stand her ground. Her decision to openly reject the university’s directive is being interpreted by some as a calculated political move aimed at energizing her supporters.

University authorities have not yet publicly responded directly to Karema’s statements, but their earlier communication made it clear that any breach of the rules would attract disciplinary action. Security teams have already been instructed to prevent unauthorized gatherings and ensure compliance with the guidelines.

As tensions continue to build, Karema’s defiance sets the stage for a potential confrontation between her campaign team and university management. The situation remains fluid, with many closely watching whether the planned event will go ahead and how authorities will respond if it does.
