Mercy Kanyesigye Nominated for National Female Youth MP Seat, Pledges to Champion Youth Empowerment
Mercy Kanyesigye, one of the leading contenders for the position of National Female Youth Member of Parliament, was officially nominated yesterday, marking a significant milestone in the run-up to Uganda’s 2026 general elections.
Speaking moments after her nomination, Kanyesigye expressed gratitude to her supporters and reiterated her determination to serve as a strong and inclusive voice for young people across the country.
She emphasized that youth representation would remain at the core of her leadership agenda if elected.
“Programmes come targeting the youth. As the National Female Youth MP, I will make sure that the youth are always represented and their voices heard,” Kanyesigye said, addressing a crowd of enthusiastic supporters who gathered to witness the event.
Kanyesigye’s campaign message centers on empowering Uganda’s young population, which makes up the majority of the nation’s demographic. Her proposed agenda focuses on addressing key challenges faced by youth, including unemployment, inadequate access to skills training, and limited opportunities for talent development.
Among her top priorities is the improvement of sports infrastructure across the country. She noted that sports can be a powerful avenue for youth engagement and employment, and promised to lobby for increased government investment in modern facilities and talent development programmes.
Kanyesigye also underscored the importance of skilling initiatives, particularly for young women, to enhance their competitiveness in the job market.
“When young people are equipped with the right skills, they can create jobs for themselves and others. Skilling is the foundation for self-reliance,” she said.

Tackling youth unemployment, she added, requires not only government intervention but also strategic partnerships with the private sector and civil society to create sustainable opportunities.
Kanyesigye reaffirmed her belief that national development can only be achieved when young people are meaningfully involved in decision-making processes.
“The future of Uganda depends on how well we prepare and empower our youth today. My goal is to ensure that every young person feels represented, heard, and supported,” she emphasized.
Her nomination has sparked optimism among her supporters, who view her as a passionate advocate for youth empowerment and inclusive growth.

As the campaign season intensifies, Kanyesigye is expected to engage with youth groups nationwide to rally support for her vision of a more inclusive and youth-centered Uganda.
