Makerere Lord Councillor Elect ‘DPC’ launches bid to refurbish Kampala urban channels
Bagonza Amon popularly known by his alias DPC who is also the Makerere Lord Councillor elect has today morning launched his agenda to refurbish the urban Kampala drainage channel once he takes oath in his portfolio.
Bagonza, a Makerere University graduate of Industrial and Fine Art intends to apply his knowledge to give the city a brand new look with his grand master plan to improve the drainage system.
Flanked by dozens of his supporters at Makerere Kikoni this morning, Bagonza who is renowned for for his hands on approach was donned in gum boots and stood inside an open drainage channel in Makerere Kikoni where he addressed the media and launched his vision.
“I am looking at a Kampala where all our drainage channel system is enclosed and devoid of any sort of openings,” he said as he launched his vision. “A Kampala free from accidents associated with the open drainage system and a crime free Kampala devoid of criminals who take advantage of the open channels to become a security threat to other city dwellers,” he added.
Bagonza says his vision will be implemented in a systematic partnership with development partners from China with whom he intends to have cordial relations.
“I will engage some development partners in China and these will render us a hand by offering loans that we shall pay within a time frame of five years,” he said. “The loans shall be paid when we subject our civil servants to a mandatory use of a railway system that we shall impose on the surface of the enclosed drainage system,” he added.
Bagonza says he intends to create a modern railway line on the surface of these drainage channels once enclosed just like the Hamis Kigunddu downtown Kampala central business district project. He says the railway will help decongest the city as it will be considered an alternative means of transportation. He explains that these railways shall also have sub stations where modern markets shall be placed to address the urban unemployment problem.
Bagonza, a member of the ruling National Resistance Movement party is poised to contest for the officers of Speaker at Kampala Capital City Authority which he believes shall give him enough leverage to ensure that such projects are considered and implement.
