Its NUP That Confronted Our Security!! Police Reveals Why LoP Ssenyonyi And Journalists Were Thumped

A confrontation between National Unity Platform (NUP) leaders and security forces happened yesterday in Kawempe.

The incident happened when Leader of Opposition Joel Ssenyonyi and candidate Elias Nalukoola entered a premises in Namere, alleging that ballot papers were being pre-marked.

The Uganda Police Force said NUP should have informed them first, as their actions provoked the security personnel present.

Police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke stated, “If NUP suspected ballot stuffing, they should have first informed security forces instead of taking matters into their own hands. Their actions provoked security personnel at the premises.”

During the incident, Spark TV journalist Steven Kibwiika was assaulted while recording.

Rusoke said, “It was not an intended action against him.”

He added, “We always brief our officers before operations, but there are individuals who may act outside directives. We are working to ensure such issues are addressed.”

The incident comes amid concerns over the treatment of journalists and election-related tensions. A day earlier, police used tear gas and live bullets to disperse opposition supporters, injuring some journalists and damaging a BBS TV crew’s vehicle.

With the by-election set for today, March 13, both political parties and security forces are under observation, with calls for fairness and calm to ensure a peaceful voting process.
