From Power to Panic: Anita Among ‘Nearly Collapsed’ Watching Luxury Cars Seized

Mounting political pressure and a widening corruption storm appear to be taking a heavy emotional and physical toll on former Speaker of Parliament Anita Among, with highly placed sources claiming her health has significantly deteriorated amid ongoing investigations, hostile media scrutiny and growing isolation within Uganda’s power circles.

Sources familiar with the situation say the once-powerful political figure has lately suffered episodes linked to low blood pressure and stress-induced vulnerability, conditions they attribute to the relentless public attention surrounding the investigations into her conduct and the dramatic shift in political support she once enjoyed.

According to insiders, the emotional strain intensified after outspoken remarks by David Kabanda were publicly reinforced by Muhoozi Kainerugaba, commonly known as Gen MK, signaling that powerful figures within the ruling establishment had withdrawn political protection and no longer wished to see Among continue serving as Speaker.

Sources claim the developments deeply unsettled Among, who had for years cultivated an image of influence, wealth and political dominance. Individuals close to the embattled politician say few things have tormented her more than watching state operatives reportedly move against her prized fleet of luxury vehicles, many of which had become symbols of her political and financial stature.

“She was emotionally shattered,” a source familiar with the matter said, describing scenes in which expensive vehicles associated with Among were allegedly towed away as crowds gathered in excitement while media houses broadcast the events live.

According to accounts from people within her circle, the public spectacle left her devastated and overwhelmed. One source even claimed that she nearly collapsed while witnessing the seizure operations unfold in full public view.

As pressure mounted, individuals within Among’s political and religious networks reportedly began exploring ways to de-escalate tensions before her health condition worsened further. Sources say this effort was undertaken with her full knowledge and approval.

Part of that strategy allegedly involved mobilizing a group of influential bishops and senior clerics to seek a private audience with Yoweri Museveni in an effort to plead for leniency and political mercy on her behalf.

Insiders say the bishops’ mission was driven not only by political calculations but also by growing fears surrounding Among’s mental and physical resilience should the matter proceed to a full criminal trial.

There is reportedly serious concern among her allies that any attempt to remand her to either Luzira Prison or Kitalya Prison could trigger severe health complications, given the emotional distress she is already said to be battling.

“She is not one of those hardened politicians who can easily endure detention and prison conditions,” one source claimed, adding that people around her believe incarceration could have devastating consequences on her wellbeing.

For that reason, religious leaders were reportedly viewed as one of the few remaining groups capable of directly approaching Museveni without fear and persuading him to reconsider the hardline position increasingly associated with the investigations.

The broader objective, according to sources, is to secure a political settlement that would prevent Among from being formally arraigned in court, remanded or subjected to a prolonged criminal prosecution process.

However, despite the urgency behind the effort, sources say the clerics have so far struggled to secure an audience with Museveni, whose interest in intervening appears to be fading.

Several insiders described the President as increasingly distant and less willing to engage on matters concerning Among, a dramatic contrast from the level of access and influence she reportedly enjoyed at the height of her political power.

As uncertainty deepens, the unfolding developments continue to fuel speculation within Uganda’s political establishment about whether Anita Among’s troubles are merely legal — or whether they signal a much broader and irreversible political downfall.
