Baguma Amon Bagonza ‘DPC’ Takes Early Lead in Makerere University LC5 Councillor Race

The Makerere University political scene is heating up as Baguma Amon Bagonza, popularly known as “DPC”, takes an early lead in the race for LC5 Councillor representing Makerere University at the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA).

Running under the National Resistance Movement (NRM) ticket, DPC’s candidacy has stirred renewed interest in campus politics and drawn national attention due to his close association with President Yoweri Museveni’s mobilisation structures.

Baguma, a well-known student leader and political mobiliser, has built a reputation as a loyal NRM operative both within and outside Makerere University. His grassroots approach and charisma among students have strengthened his campaign, positioning him as a strong favourite to clinch the KCCA LC5 seat.

Meanwhile, the opposition National Unity Platform (NUP), which has dominated Makerere’s political landscape in recent years, appears to be grappling with internal divisions.

Reports indicate that conflicting interests and factionalism within the party’s campus leadership have weakened its organisational strength ahead of the election. This disunity has provided fertile ground for DPC and the NRM to regain influence at the university.

Supporters of DPC describe him as a unifying figure capable of bridging the gap between student interests and national development agendas. They argue that his leadership at the KCCA level would ensure that Makerere students’ voices are well-represented in city governance, particularly on issues of infrastructure, youth employment, and education policy.

“The NRM is back at Makerere, and DPC is leading the charge,” one supporter noted during a campus rally. “He understands student needs but also knows how to engage with national leaders to make change happen.”

Political analysts view Baguma’s rise as part of a broader strategy by the ruling party to reclaim youth support in institutions of higher learning. His growing popularity demonstrates the NRM’s renewed focus on student politics, once dominated by opposition movements.

As the election approaches, all eyes remain on Makerere University. If the current trend continues, Baguma Amon Bagonza alias DPC could make history as the first NRM-affiliated LC5 Councillor for Makerere University at KCCA in years — a development that may reshape the political dynamics of Uganda’s most influential university.
