Anita Among’s Elder Son Returns From UK, Takes Over Her Multi Billion Business Empire

Anita Among’s Elder Son Returns From UK, Takes Over Her Multi Billion Business Empire

Former Speaker of Parliament Annet Anita Among’s vast business interests are now being overseen by one of her elder sons, _The Witness Uganda_ reports.

According to sources close to Among, the son, who had been living in the United Kingdom, returned to Uganda shortly after his mother was placed under house arrest. He came back to support family members and help manage her affairs during a period described by insiders as highly stressful for the former Speaker.

Among, 53 and born in 1973, rose to national prominence within five years and is now counted among Uganda’s wealthiest politicians. Notably, her rapid accumulation of wealth has no known precedent in her family, including in her home district of Bukedea.

The son is currently said to be supervising a wide range of her assets. These include Bukedea Comprehensive School, Bukedea Teaching Hospital, Bukedea College of Health Sciences, several hotels and guest houses in the Kampala metropolitan area, and various farms across the country.

On the legal front, the family is reportedly engaging two major Kampala law firms. The goal is to have them work alongside senior criminal lawyers Caleb Alaka and Evans Ochieng. Their initial priorities are to secure a court order for the withdrawal of military personnel from Among’s Nakasero residence and to allow her to resume both her private business operations and her duties as Bukedea District Woman MP.

Beyond court representation, the legal team is also said to be exploring political avenues. Sources claim they have begun reaching out to associates of Gen. Salim Saleh in hopes of arranging a meeting to discuss a resolution that would spare Among criminal prosecution. One source noted that while no final agreement has been reached, initial contacts have already been made.

This follows a reported June meeting in which Among directly appealed to President Museveni for the restoration of her freedoms and access to medical care. Museveni is said to have told her that any decision would depend on the outcome of ongoing criminal investigations.

The pressure on Among has intensified in recent months. Former Aruu County MP Samuel Odong Otto has suggested that the prosecution of seven senior parliamentary officials signals that Among herself could soon face charges at the Anti-Corruption Court. Veteran journalist Andrew Mwenda has also commented that she is viewed as a formidable figure within the judiciary, making legal battles complex. To counter this, sources say her team is mobilizing support through Teso cultural leaders, religious figures, and politicians to plead her case with top government officials.

Amuria County MP Samuel Ediau claims Among is enduring both physical and psychological strain while under guard. He says she has been unable to exercise freely at her Nakasero home, with soldiers reportedly restricting her movements. Ediau also stated that all of her bank and mobile money accounts have been frozen, creating financial difficulties.

In 2024, the US, UK, EU, UAE and allied countries imposed sanctions on Among and close family members over allegations of corruption and human rights violations.

Health concerns have also become central. After being permitted to visit Mulago Referral Hospital under heavy security, doctors reportedly advised her next of kin that she needs specialized treatment abroad. Ediau says Among suffers from high blood pressure, diabetes and other conditions requiring urgent care.

State House sources indicate Museveni is monitoring her health, which is one reason her scheduled court appearances have been postponed, despite earlier recommendations by investigators to have her charged and remanded.

Among is under investigation for allegations including money laundering, embezzlement, abuse of office, corruption, theft of public funds, and illicit enrichment.
