UPDF Shoots Civilians Dead In Agago, Reveals Why
A tragic incident unfolded in Agago District when Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) soldiers encountered a group of civilians drinking and playing cards past the curfew time set by local authorities.
According to UPDF spokesperson Mwenda, the confrontation escalated, leading to gunfire that resulted in multiple deaths.
The incident occurred at approximately 2:30 a.m. when UPDF personnel from a local battalion were patrolling the area to enforce curfew regulations.
Upon discovering the civilians at a bar, an altercation reportedly broke out, though details on how events escalated remain unclear.
“The soldiers found a group of people violating curfew regulations. What followed was an unfortunate turn of events,” said Mwenda.
He further stated that the officers had orders to ensure compliance with the restrictions but did not elaborate on why lethal force was used.
The deaths have sparked outrage, with residents demanding justice for the victims. Many argue that enforcing curfew rules should not have resulted in fatal shootings.
“These were unarmed civilians. Why did they have to be shot?” questioned a local resident.
Human rights groups have also condemned the killings, calling for an independent investigation into the actions of the UPDF soldiers.
“There are legal ways to handle curfew violations. Shooting civilians should never be an option,” said a spokesperson for a civil rights organization.
Meanwhile, the UPDF has assured the public that a probe into the incident is underway.
“We regret the loss of life and will investigate what transpired,” Mwenda stated.
Even as tensions rise, the people of Agago District are demanding accountability, with many questioning whether excessive force has become a norm in enforcing government directives.
