Just In!! Police Officer Dies In A Deadly Accident While Chasing Suspects

A police officer attached to Nsangi Police Station tragically lost his life in a road accident that happened early Saturday morning, May 3, 2025, near Prompet Fuel Station in Namagoma, along the Kampala-Masaka Highway.

The officer has been identified as Police Constable (PC) Otema Ben, badge number 52679. He was a 36-year-old Acholi officer, known for his discipline and dedication. He lived in Nsangi Central, in Kyengera Town Council, Wakiso District.

According to police reports, the incident occurred at around 4:30 AM. PC Otema and his team had received information about a suspicious vehicle believed to be involved in smuggling. At the time, he was on duty at Luqman Fuel Station with other officers and a police patrol car—UP 1328, a Toyota Land Cruiser.

Instead of using the patrol vehicle, PC Otema reportedly chose to use a bodaboda (motorcycle) to respond faster. He jumped on a red Haojue motorcycle, registration number UMA 037CD, and started chasing the suspected car towards Kampala.

As they reached near Prompet Fuel Station, another vehicle, a green Mercedes Benz, registration UAH 901R, driven by Mr. Kagenda Sirage, was also heading in the same direction. Mr. Kagenda tried to turn into the fuel station. As he branched, the bodaboda reportedly hit a road hump, lost control, and crashed into the Benz on the driver’s side.

The impact was strong. PC Otema and the rider were both thrown off the motorcycle. The rider quickly fled the scene, leaving PC Otema badly injured. Police officers arrived shortly after and rushed him to Galaxy Clinic in Nsangi, but he sadly died from his injuries.

The bodaboda rider has not been identified and is currently on the run. Police have asked the public to help with any information that could lead to his arrest.

Police Response and Investigation

Senior police officers, including Nsangi Division Police Commander SP Cheben Rogers, visited the scene, along with traffic police, crime scene investigators, and field force officers.

PC Otema’s body was taken to Mulago City Mortuary for a postmortem examination.

Both the motorcycle and the Benz were towed to Maya Bus Checkpoint and are being held for mechanical inspection by the Inspector of Vehicles (IOV).

A Police Form 94 was issued to the Benz driver to record his involvement in the incident.

Police say investigations are ongoing, and they are treating the case with urgency. They are also calling on anyone who may have witnessed the crash or knows the bodaboda rider to come forward.

The tragic loss has left the team at Nsangi Police Station deeply heartbroken, as PC Otema Ben was widely respected for his hard work, professionalism, and courage.
