How I Protected My Son in China from Catching Coronavirus
When the coronavirus first broke out in China in early January 2020, I panicked because my son was living right in the epicentre of the outbreak. He was my firstborn and had been there for the past three years pursuing his Master’s in Microbiology, and naturally, as a mother, I was always worried because I never wanted to lose him to the deadly disease that was sweeping through Wuhan, the exact city where he lived.
I spoke to him daily and he confessed that he was growing more afraid of contracting the coronavirus and possibly dying in a foreign country. I cried every day, especially after the government declined to evacuate Kenyans living in China. I was deeply scared and depressed, and although my family kept reassuring me that he would be fine, the fear of losing my firstborn far from home was unbearable.
