Drama!! Questions Arise As Ugandan Man Is Buried With 200 Million to Seek Forgivenes On Judgement Day
In a story that has stunned many across Uganda and beyond, a 52-year-old former civil servant, Charles Obong, made a highly unusual request before his death—he wanted to be buried with 200 million Ugandan shillings (approximately $55,000).
Obong, who served as a senior personnel officer in Uganda’s Ministry of Public Service from 2006 to 2016, had been battling a long illness before he passed away. In his final days, he left behind detailed instructions: his wife, along with his brother and sister, was to ensure the large sum of money was placed inside his coffin. According to Obong, the money would serve as a “bribe” to God on Judgment Day, in hopes of securing forgiveness for unspecified sins.
True to his wishes, his family carried out the bizarre burial. He was laid to rest in a luxurious metallic coffin valued at 20 million shillings, at his ancestral home in Lira. The act shocked many—but the story didn’t end there.
Not long after the burial, members of his clan took the dramatic step of exhuming the body and removing the money. Though Obong’s instructions had been followed initially, the clan reportedly felt it was morally wrong to let such a large amount of money be buried. The exact reason for their decision remains unclear, but it stirred considerable public attention.
The incident has sparked wide-ranging reactions and debates. For some, it is a striking example of how deeply people believe in the afterlife and divine judgment. Others see it as an act driven by guilt and fear, or perhaps a reflection of how religion and personal beliefs can influence end-of-life decisions.
Obong’s burial has also raised questions about the source of the money, particularly given his role in government during a period marked by corruption scandals. While there is no direct evidence linking him to misconduct, the size of the buried sum has fueled public speculation.
Beyond the personal drama, the case has opened up broader conversations about religion, tradition, and the limits of honoring a person’s final wishes. It also highlights the potential clash between individual desires and community values—a tension that played out in the final chapter of Charles Obong’s unusual legacy.
