Uganda, Netherlands Partner to Expand Rural Electrification with Mini Hydropower Plants
Uganda has launched a major renewable energy initiative with support from the Netherlands, aiming to boost electricity access in rural areas. The project, financed by the Dutch government, will see the construction of nine mini hydropower plants with a total capacity of 6.7MW, alongside a 288-kilometre distribution network spanning multiple districts.
During the groundbreaking ceremony for the Orio mini hydropower project in Mitooma District on Saturday, Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa praised the Netherlands for its commitment to Uganda’s energy sector. “This partnership demonstrates the power of international collaboration in expanding electricity access, which is essential for economic growth. It’s not just about lighting homes; it’s about creating opportunities for businesses, schools, and healthcare facilities,” he said.
The initiative is set to provide electricity to 71,081 households and 2,300 small businesses, driving economic development in underserved communities. Energy Minister Dr. Canon Ruth Nankabirwa emphasized its role in promoting rural electrification, reducing dependence on firewood and charcoal, and improving essential services like education and healthcare.
Construction, expected to take 24 months, will be undertaken by HNAC Technology Co. Ltd (China) and Ossberger GmbH (Germany). The first phase will focus on four sites: Nchwera, Igassa, Nsongya, and Hoima.
Joost Van Ettro, Deputy Ambassador of the Netherlands, reaffirmed his country’s dedication to Uganda’s energy goals, stating, “This project is crucial for Uganda’s sustainable development. We have contributed Shs50 billion, covering 30% of the total cost, to ensure reliable and affordable electricity for all.”
The initiative aligns with Uganda’s broader strategy to expand renewable energy, enhance rural development, and strengthen ties with international partners.
