Exposed!! Elwelu’s Forced Retirement Brings Silent Rebellion In UPDF – Top Non Banyan

Lt Gen Peter Elwelu will retire from the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) in July 2025. But even before he leaves, his exit is already causing tension. Many people think his retirement could start a power fight inside the army.

Elwelu has been in the army for many years. He held strong positions, but some of his actions caused problems. One big moment was in 2016, during a military operation in Kasese. Many people died, and this left a deep wound in the country.

Some people blame Elwelu for what happened. Others still support him and say he was just doing his job. This disagreement has made Elwelu a very strong but also a very divisive figure.

Later, Elwelu was removed from his high position as Deputy Chief of Defence Forces. He was made a presidential advisor instead. This looked like a way to quietly push him out of the army’s top command.

Not long after that, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who now controls the army, started speaking badly about Elwelu on social media. This showed that there was bad blood between the two generals. Their fight made people in the army take sides.

Now, as Elwelu prepares to retire, the people who supported him may feel left out. Muhoozi is likely to bring in people who are loyal to him. This could cause more division in the army. Some officers may feel ignored or pushed aside. If that happens, the unity in the army could break.

The tension in the UPDF could also affect Uganda’s politics. A divided army is dangerous for any country. So Elwelu’s retirement is not just a simple exit. It might lead to big changes in the military and in Uganda’s future.
