“Decades of Service, Still No Pay” Former Mbarara Pensioners Cry Out for Justice

Retired public servants from the former Greater Mbarara District are making an urgent appeal to the government to resolve long-standing delays in their pension payments, which they say have left them financially strained and neglected.

Despite years of dedicated service, many pensioners report that they have not received their full benefits. They feel their contributions to the country have been overlooked, with promises unfulfilled and their sacrifices forgotten.

Attempts to seek assistance from government offices have often been met with indifference or poor treatment, adding emotional and physical strain to their already difficult circumstances in old age.

Without their rightful payments, many struggle to afford basic necessities such as food, housing, and medical care. Supporting their families has also become increasingly difficult.

The pensioners argue that the delays are not only a financial burden but also a sign of deep disrespect for their service and role in Uganda’s development.

Efforts to obtain updates on their pension status frequently lead to dead ends, buried in bureaucracy or ignored entirely, leaving many feeling abandoned by the very system they once served.

Local leaders and advocacy groups are calling for a thorough investigation and swift action to release the funds. They warn that justice delayed is justice denied for these elderly citizens.

With many of the affected now in advanced age—and some having died without ever receiving their pensions—the urgency has only grown. Their families are left behind, grappling with financial hardship and a lack of closure.

Pensioners and their supporters are urging authorities to act quickly, restore dignity to those who served, and ensure future retirees are spared such neglect in their later years.
