Best And Worst Universities In Uganda In 2025
The July 2025 edition of the Webometrics global university rankings has reaffirmed Makerere University’s position as Uganda’s top academic institution, while also highlighting Kampala International University (KIU) as a rising force among private universities.
Makerere University retained its dominance, ranking 778th globally. It continues to lead in research excellence and openness, with excellence and openness ranks of 1,143 and 1,207 respectively.
However, its impact rank—measuring web presence—stood at 1,643, suggesting room for improvement in digital visibility.
Makerere’s performance highlights its strong academic credentials, but also signals a need for enhanced global engagement through online platforms.
KIU emerged as the highest-ranked private institution, placing 1,516th globally and second nationally.
It posted a solid impact rank of 1,530, indicating a strong digital footprint, although its research output remains comparatively weaker with an excellence rank of 3,706.
KIU’s strategy appears to emphasize visibility and accessibility, making it a digital leader among Uganda’s private universities.
“For Ugandan institutions to thrive internationally, they must invest in research, embrace digital transformation, and foster a culture of openness in academic publishing,” said Moses Kayiwa, a researcher.
MUST – Mbarara University of Science and Technology came third overall and 1,957th globally. It maintained a strong research profile but suffered from low impact visibility, ranked at 7,151.
This suggests that while the university generates quality academic work, it has not translated this into global recognition through web dissemination.
Kabale University continues to punch above its weight, surpassing older institutions like Kyambogo and Busitema in research excellence and openness.
This marks an upward trajectory for the southwestern university, likely driven by investments in academic publishing and digital infrastructure.
Gulu University, which ranked fourth nationally, showed some improvement in research and openness but still struggled with visibility, posting an impact rank of 11,161.
Kyambogo and Busitema universities followed closely but were hampered by relatively weak research output and poor digital performance.
Among private universities, Uganda Martyrs University, Uganda Management Institute, and the Islamic University in Uganda ranked among the top 10.
These institutions have shown resilience, particularly in professional education and digital resource access. Uganda Management Institute notably had one of the best impact ranks in the top 10, reflecting strategic online engagement.
Poor performers
However, many other private universities continue to underperform. Clarke International University, King Caesar University, and International University of East Africa have made progress in research output but remain limited by weak visibility and openness metrics.
Their growth is constrained by a lack of impactful online engagement and academic transparency.
Some institutions are in deep decline. Muteesa I Royal University, Kampala University, and Livingstone International University performed poorly across all indicators.
These institutions lack both academic output and digital presence, placing them near the bottom of the national rankings.
Newer public universities like Lira University and Muni University showed mid-table potential.
Lira, in particular, posted promising openness scores, indicating efforts to increase access to research and academic materials.
Makerere University Business School, despite its legacy, ranked only 20th nationally, with strong openness but weak research performance.
At the bottom of the rankings, institutions such as Great Lakes Regional University, Monaco Institute, and Kayiwa International University had negligible web impact and virtually no global academic presence.
These schools appear to exist in name only when evaluated by international academic standards.
The overall trend shows that while Makerere University remains Uganda’s undisputed academic leader, it faces growing competition in digital visibility from institutions like KIU and Kabale University.
The rankings also highlight the importance of web presence, transparency, and open-access research as critical components of academic competitiveness.
The Webometrics ranking is based on a composite score comprising web impact (50 percent), openness (10 percent), and research excellence (40 percent). While it does not assess teaching quality or employability outcomes, it remains a vital global metric for evaluating the visibility and scholarly reach of universities.
