Ugandan Gays Set To ‘Die’ As USAID Suspension Leads To Cut Off Of Vital Health Care For LGBT

The recent suspension of funding by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) is raising serious concerns about the well-being of Uganda’s LGBTQ community, human rights activist Frank Mugisha has warned.

Mugisha highlighted that the withdrawal of critical international support is already causing disruptions in healthcare services, particularly for sexual minorities who rely on non-governmental organizations (NGOs) for essential medical care.

“This threatens the health of community members by increasing the likelihood of interruptions in medication, reduced access to prevention services, and overall deterioration in healthcare support,” he said.

Several organizations that provided healthcare and social support to LGBTQ individuals have already shut down, while others are struggling with staff layoffs, further limiting access to crucial services.

According to Mugisha, the situation is dire, as these organizations play a vital role in bridging the gap where government services fall short.

“Without continued support, the closure of these organizations and staff layoffs will severely limit access to essential healthcare for LGBTQ individuals in Uganda, leading to worsening health outcomes and heightened vulnerabilities,” he added.

The suspension of USAID funding comes amid Uganda’s controversial Anti-Homosexuality Act (AHA), which has led to increased persecution of LGBTQ individuals.Mugisha noted that the combination of harsh local laws and the withdrawal of international assistance has made the community even more vulnerable, with many fearing for their safety and survival. While the Ugandan government maintains that it will not bow to external pressure, activists warn that the impact on marginalized groups, particularly in the health sector, will be severe. Many now worry that this funding cut will exacerbate an already precarious situation, leaving thousands without the medical care they desperately need.
