Kenya Strengthens Border Surveillance Following Sudan Ebola Outbreak in Uganda
Kenya’s Ministry of Health announced on Friday that it has stepped up surveillance measures at all entry points across the country in response to the Sudan Ebola outbreak in neighboring Uganda.
Mary Muthoni, Principal Secretary of the Ministry of Health, confirmed that surveillance systems have been bolstered in all counties and at border points. She also stated that a rapid assessment of Kenya’s readiness to handle a similar outbreak is currently underway, with a comprehensive preparedness plan expected soon.
Muthoni urged the public to rely on credible information from qualified healthcare professionals, community health workers, or the Ministry of Health’s official channels.
This announcement followed Uganda’s declaration of an Ebola outbreak on Thursday after a 32-year-old nurse succumbed to the Sudan Ebola virus on Wednesday. This marks the eighth Ebola outbreak in Uganda.
The World Health Organization (WHO) is collaborating with Ugandan health authorities to strengthen surveillance, case management, community outreach, and risk communication efforts.
Ebola is a highly contagious disease with symptoms such as fever, headache, diarrhea, vomiting, and general body weakness. The fatality rate for Ebola varies between 50% and 89%, depending on the virus subtype.
