Mass Teacher Absenteeism Exposed as Hundreds of Pupils Fail PLE Exams in Kikuube
Authorities in Uganda’s Kikuube District have launched an investigation into several primary school teachers over poor performance in the recent Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE). Education officials cite widespread teacher absenteeism as a key factor behind the high failure rate.
According to statistics from the district’s education department, 4,259 students sat for the exams, with 363 failing completely. The data further shows that 250 students secured Division One grades, 2,046 passed in Division Two, 1,018 in Division Three, and 449 in Division Four. Additionally, 133 registered candidates failed to appear for the exams.
The figures also reveal that more girls (2,152) sat for the exams compared to boys (2,107). Among them, 148 boys and 102 girls achieved Division One results.
Amon Zondera, Kikuube’s Inspector of Schools, confirmed that an inquiry is underway into allegations of teacher absenteeism, which he believes contributed to the poor performance. He warned that those found guilty will face disciplinary action. Zondera also pointed to student absenteeism, a shortage of teachers due to retirements, and irregular attendance patterns by both students and teachers as contributing factors.
Kikuube Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) Canon Edward Busingye announced that teachers who repeatedly fail to report for duty may be removed from the government payroll, describing absenteeism as a form of corruption impacting the district’s education system.
Deogratius Byakagaba, the Kikuube District Education Officer (DEO), echoed similar concerns, warning that disciplinary measures will be enforced. He also highlighted the lack of school-provided meals, stating that hunger negatively affects students’ ability to concentrate and perform well academically.
As investigations continue, local education authorities are under pressure to address systemic challenges affecting learning outcomes in the district.
