SAD!! UPDF Soldier Kills Himself After Watching Arsenal – Man U Football Match

A tragic and puzzling incident has unfolded in Kisoro District, where a soldier with the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has reportedly taken his own life.

The deceased, identified as 32-year-old Pte. Samuel Kwesiga, allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself inside his unipot, a small makeshift shelter. The event occurred shortly after he had finished watching the much-anticipated English Premier League match between Manchester United and Arsenal at a local viewing spot, the Nyanamo Trading Centre.

Pte. Kwesiga, whose service number was RA 267544, was attached to the Nyanamo Detach under the 35th Battalion. His lifeless body was discovered on Monday, August 18, at approximately 7:00 a.m. in Kigyeyo Village, which is part of the Nyanamo Town Council.

According to preliminary investigations, the sequence of events leading up to the tragedy began on Sunday, August 17. At about 6:00 p.m., Kwesiga went to a nearby trading centre to watch the high-stakes football game. After the match concluded, he returned to the detach at around 9:00 p.m. and informed his colleagues that he was tired before retreating to his unipot. Once inside, he locked the door behind him.

Moments later, the silence was shattered by a gunshot coming from Kwesiga’s unit. Initially, his colleagues and other residents suspected it was an accidental discharge of his weapon. However, when they tried to reach him and received no response, they grew concerned. They peered through a window and were met with a horrific sight: Kwesiga lying in a pool of his own blood. The door was subsequently forced open, and they found him deceased with a gunshot wound.

The Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson, Elly Maate, officially confirmed the incident. He stated that police officers, working in collaboration with UPDF personnel, were dispatched to the scene to document the crime. A thorough search of the unipot resulted in the recovery of a spent cartridge and a rifle with four magazines, which were secured as key exhibits in the ongoing investigation.

Maate also confirmed that official statements were recorded from various witnesses, including fellow soldiers and local residents, to piece together the events of that evening. Following the documentation process, the body was transported to the Kisoro Hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination.

Once the procedure is complete, the body will be handed over to the UPDF command to finalize burial arrangements. Investigations are still ongoing to determine the exact motive behind what is suspected to be a suicide.
