“Your New Term Must Protect Every Ugandan” – UHRC Sends Powerful Message to Museveni

The Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC) has congratulated President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni as he officially begins another term in office, while at the same time calling upon him to make the protection of human rights a key priority during his leadership. The message was released ahead of the President’s swearing-in ceremony held on 12th May 2026 at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds.

In a statement guided by UHRC Chairperson Mariam Wangadya, the commission described the start of Museveni’s new term as a critical moment for Uganda to strengthen justice, equality, constitutionalism, and unity among citizens. The body noted that leadership carries a huge responsibility of protecting the dignity and freedoms of the people.

UHRC emphasized that the future of the country depends not only on economic growth and infrastructure development, but also on how citizens are treated and whether they are able to enjoy their rights without fear or discrimination. According to the commission, true progress is achieved when people feel safe, respected, and heard by those in power.

The commission further stated that although Uganda has made steps in creating institutions that defend democracy and human rights, there is still a need for stronger action to ensure that every citizen fully experiences fairness and justice in daily life. It stressed that human rights must move beyond promises and become reality for ordinary Ugandans.
In its message, UHRC reminded leaders that every Ugandan deserves equal opportunity, protection, and dignity regardless of their tribe, religion, gender, political belief, or social status. The commission explained that leadership should always focus on improving the lives of citizens and responding to their needs with compassion and fairness.

The commission also linked human rights to economic empowerment, saying people cannot live dignified lives without access to jobs, education, healthcare, and social support. UHRC encouraged government to continue implementing programs that uplift youth, women, and vulnerable communities struggling with poverty and unemployment.
UHRC additionally appealed for governance that values accountability, inclusion, and citizen participation in national development. The body expressed hope that Uganda’s new chapter of leadership would promote peace, transparency, and stronger trust between leaders and the public.

As President Museveni takes oath for another term, UHRC’s statement has stood out as both a message of congratulations and a direct appeal for responsible leadership. The commission made it clear that protecting human rights should never be treated as an option, but as the strongest pillar for peace, justice, stability, and sustainable development in Uganda.
