Inside Story!! How Police Nabbed Man Who Allegedly Killed UCU Dean
Police have arrested a prime suspect in the brutal murder of Uganda Christian University (UCU) Director of Students’ Affairs Pamela Ruth Tumwebaze after he was allegedly found in possession of the deceased’s phone and other property.
The shocking killing of Tumwebaze, a respected administrator at Uganda Christian University, has sent waves of grief and fear through the academic community and beyond. The mother of two was attacked and killed in the early hours of February 11 at her home in Gwafu West Village, Seeta Ward, Goma Division, Mukono District. She lived there with her two sons, Elijah Matsiko, 13, and Noah Matsiko, 9, as well as a housemaid, Sharifa Lwatale, 20.
What began as a quiet night in the Seeta neighbourhood quickly turned into a crime scene that would trigger a high-level, multi-agency investigation.
Police say they responded swiftly after receiving reports from neighbours about the attack. Officers immediately cordoned off the scene to prevent interference or contamination of evidence. Within hours, a team from the Directorate of Forensics, the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID), and Defence Intelligence and Security (DIS) had joined the probe, arriving at around 6 am to begin a meticulous examination of the residence.
During the initial assessment, detectives established that Tumwebaze’s laptop and mobile phone were missing. That discovery shifted the investigation toward a digital trail, with officers focusing on tracking the stolen devices in hopes of identifying those responsible.
According to a senior detective involved in the case, officers from the Joint Anti-Terrorism Taskforce (JATT) began tracking the deceased’s phone on February 12 through call data analysis. The device remained switched off for most of the day, a move investigators believe may have been intended to evade detection. However, it was eventually powered on — and that single action proved crucial.
When the phone came back online, it revealed a location in Budaka District.
### High-Tech Tracking Leads to Budaka
A joint security team operating under the supervision of CID Director AIGP Tom Magambo was promptly dispatched to Budaka to conduct surveillance using GPS tracking technology. Investigators discovered that the location of the suspect’s phone closely matched that of the deceased’s missing device — a breakthrough that significantly narrowed the search.
The operation intensified.
On February 13, security operatives carried out a coordinated operation in Nasenyi Village, Mugiti Sub-county, Budaka District. Eight young men were arrested in a sweeping crackdown after investigators determined that their phones had reportedly communicated with the key suspect.
Among those arrested was Tasyoma Taeweiko, a boda boda rider operating at Milo 5 along the Mbale–Tirinyi road and the younger brother of the prime suspect. Investigators established that Tasyoma had contacted his brother six times using a phone registered to Rogers Opolot. Detectives also allege that he used multiple devices — a detail that raised suspicion of attempts to conceal communication trails and potentially obstruct the investigation.
The suspects were detained at Kamonkoli Police Station for interrogation as detectives worked to untangle the web of connections revealed by the call data records.
Detectives later drove with Tasyoma and housemaid Sharifa Lwatale to Nabiketo Village in Tadameri Sub-county, approximately 20 kilometres away.
There, police say they found the prime suspect.
Hussein Dak Taewaiko, aged between 23 and 24, had previously worked as a shamba boy at the deceased’s home until December. He was arrested while at his mother’s residence. According to police, the housemaid reportedly identified him as the individual she saw inside the Seeta home on the night of the murder — a key eyewitness account that strengthened the case against him.
He was arrested alongside his mother before being transferred to Kampala for further questioning.
Official Police Statement
Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Rachael Kawala confirmed the arrest of the suspected killer in a statement released Saturday, February 14, 2026.
“The Joint Security Task Team investigating the murder of Tumwebaze Pamela, the Director of Students’ Affairs at Uganda Christian University, has successfully arrested one of the key suspects identified as Taewaiko Dak Hussein in connection with the crime,” Kawala said.
Police said the suspect was found in possession of the deceased’s property, which investigators describe as critical evidence linking him to the murder.
He is currently detained at the Flying Squad headquarters in Kireka to assist with ongoing investigations. The facility is jointly accessed by JATT and police officers.
### Investigation Ongoing
While the arrest marks a significant development, authorities emphasize that investigations remain ongoing. Security agencies continue to piece together the precise sequence of events that led to Tumwebaze’s killing — from the final hours inside her Seeta home to the digital clues that ultimately guided detectives across districts.
For now, the university community mourns a fallen leader, as law enforcement agencies work to ensure that justice is served.
