John Baptist Ouma Leading Eastern Youth MP Race By 70%
In the heart of Eastern Uganda, a new political voice is rising — bold, passionate, and deeply connected to the struggles and aspirations of the region’s youth. John Baptist Ouma, a son of Bugiri with ancestral roots in Namayingo, is emerging as the frontrunner in the race for Eastern Youth Member of Parliament, capturing hearts and commanding attention with an emotional, grassroots-driven campaign.
According to a recent poll conducted by the Eastern Political Research Institute, Ouma is currently leading with a commanding 70% support among eligible youth voters across the region. His closest rivals trail far behind, a reflection of the resonance his message has found among a population hungry for real change.
Ouma’s manifesto is both bold and pragmatic. Centered on the themes of employment, education, mental health, and youth empowerment, it speaks directly to the lived realities of the young people he hopes to represent. His campaign slogan, “Your Voice, Our Future,” captures his ethos of inclusive leadership and his commitment to placing youth at the center of national dialogue.
“Growing up in Bugiri and spending countless days with my grandparents in Namayingo, I saw firsthand the challenges our people face — the silent dreams crushed by lack of opportunity, and the frustration of being unheard,” Ouma shared at a recent rally in Tororo. “I am not running to be another politician. I am running to be a bridge — between the youth and the policymakers who have ignored them for too long.”
Unlike many of his competitors, Ouma’s campaign has leaned heavily into storytelling and emotional engagement. His speeches often include powerful personal anecdotes, such as the time he had to drop out of school temporarily to help support his single mother, or the experience of watching his friends fall into cycles of unemployment and substance abuse due to systemic neglect.
This emotional candor has struck a chord, especially among university students and recent graduates who see in Ouma a mirror of their own struggles — and a leader who genuinely understands their plight.
“He speaks like us, he listens like us — and most importantly, he feels like us,” said Sarah Nabwire, a student at Busitema University. “We believe he will fight for us where it matters.”
Ouma has also gained attention for his policy proposals, including the establishment of regional innovation hubs, subsidized student loans, and youth-led community mental health programs. These promises are not just populist soundbites — his campaign has laid out clear roadmaps for implementation, drawing praise even from neutral observers.
With election day approaching, momentum continues to build. Ouma’s grassroots team, mostly composed of volunteers, is running door-to-door campaigns, leveraging social media, and hosting community dialogues in districts often ignored by traditional politicians.
Whether he ultimately wins or not, one thing is certain: John Baptist Ouma has already redefined what youth leadership can look like in Eastern Uganda. And if the polls are any indication, the youth have found not just a candidate, but a champion.
