Busiinge Aggrey Didn’t Wait for Change — He Built It

In a country where many young people face systemic barriers and limited opportunities, one Ugandan entrepreneur’s story stands out as a testament to grit, vision, and the power of creating one’s own path. Busiinge Aggrey, born in the modest town of Kakumiro in Western Uganda, didn’t wait for change to come to him—he actively built it, becoming one of the youngest and most successful entrepreneurs in Uganda’s rapidly evolving digital and tech sectors.

At just 24 years old, Aggrey is the founder and CEO of Abjine Media Group, a diversified conglomerate that spans digital publishing, film production, and cloud computing. But his journey to the top wasn’t handed to him on a silver platter. Born to a single mother who was battling HIV/AIDS, Aggrey’s early life was marked by poverty and hardship. Alongside his twin brother Ivan and two sisters, he grew up in a home where money was scarce, but determination was in abundance.

Despite the financial struggles, Aggrey’s academic prowess stood out. He was consistently among the top students in his class throughout his primary and secondary education, even though his family couldn’t always afford the necessary school fees or materials.
The Beginning of a Vision

Aggrey’s journey from a small-town boy to a visionary entrepreneur began in his teenage years when he developed an interest in digital media and filmmaking. A self-taught filmmaker, he started creating short skits and videos with a smartphone, laying the foundation for what would later become his passion and career. This was just the beginning of a much larger vision.

In 2018, after completing his secondary education, Aggrey joined Vision Films, a Ugandan film production studio, as a cinematographer and video editor. However, the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, which led to mass layoffs, forced him out of the industry he had just begun to immerse himself in. But rather than see this setback as a roadblock, Aggrey saw it as an opportunity.

In exchange for his YouTube channel, he secured a professional camera worth UGX 4 million (approximately $1,100). This investment marked the beginning of his journey as a freelance videographer, shooting weddings, music videos, and corporate events. The income from these gigs would later serve as the capital he needed to build his next ventures.

By mid-2020, Aggrey had set the stage for his greatest entrepreneurial leap yet. He launched Abjine Productions, a film and digital content company that would serve as the cornerstone of his future empire. The name “Abjine” was chosen as a tribute to his family—each letter representing a family member who had played a pivotal role in his life. The company quickly expanded, leveraging Aggrey’s skills in filmmaking, storytelling, and digital content creation to push boundaries and take on new challenges.

But Aggrey didn’t stop there.

Later that year, he launched The Black Examiner, an online news platform initially created as a WordPress blog, which he later transformed into one of Uganda’s most rapidly growing digital news outlets. By 2023, the platform had become a household name in Ugandan media, attracting a substantial readership both locally and internationally. Aggrey’s knack for digital innovation saw him expand Abjine Media Group, eventually renaming it to reflect its broader reach into digital publishing, tech, and cloud computing.
Venturing into Cloud Computing

In 2024, Aggrey made a bold pivot to the tech space, selling The Black Examiner to invest in cloud infrastructure. His new venture, Host Darling Cloud, aimed to revolutionize Uganda’s cloud computing industry by providing affordable and scalable web hosting services. Building on this success, he also launched Splest, a domain registrar and web hosting service that quickly rose to prominence as one of East Africa’s leading tech companies.

With a growing portfolio, Aggrey has positioned himself at the intersection of media, technology, and entrepreneurship. Host Darling Cloud and Splest have become critical players in the region’s digital economy, hosting thousands of websites and providing essential tech services to businesses and individuals across Africa.

Aggrey’s ambitions didn’t end with cloud computing. His media empire grew even further in 2024 with the introduction of two new publications: The Daily Nile, which covers news from the Nile Basin countries, and The Ghetto Post, focusing on the stories of underrepresented urban communities. Through these ventures, Aggrey continues to champion the importance of representation and giving a voice to those who are often ignored by mainstream media.
