Shocking!! Tooro King Oyo Allegedly Battling Cancer , Admitted In ICU

Fort Portal — Anxiety has spread across Tooro Kingdom following reports that Omukama Rukirabasaija Dr. Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV has been admitted to an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at a hospital in the United States, where he is reportedly receiving specialized medical treatment.

Witness Uganda has reliably learned from sources close to the Karuzika Palace that the 34-year-old monarch has been undergoing treatment in the United States for several months. However, by the time of publication, Tooro Kingdom had not issued an official statement confirming either the King’s reported admission to an ICU or the nature of his illness.

According to palace sources who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the matter publicly, the Omukama is reportedly battling cancer. The claim, however, remains unverified independently, and neither the royal household nor medical officials have publicly confirmed the reported diagnosis.

Sources further indicated that the identity of the hospital where the King is reportedly receiving treatment has deliberately been withheld. They claim this decision was made to avoid attracting large numbers of Batoro and other well-wishers living in the United States who might attempt to visit the monarch during his treatment.

The reports have triggered concern among subjects of the Kingdom both in Uganda and abroad, particularly given the King’s significance as one of the country’s most recognizable traditional leaders and the world’s youngest reigning monarch at the time of his coronation.

One source within the royal circles told TheSpy Uganda on Sunday that members of the royal family initially agreed to keep the King’s health condition private to avoid causing panic among his subjects.

“Things are getting out of hand. We first kept it a top secret but if we don’t talk now, it will be hard to convince the subjects that he has been sick. Remember the circumstances under which his father, King David Matthew Kaboyo, died and the controversies that followed? We have to mitigate similar scenarios. Let the subjects know and pray for their King,” the source said.

The remarks underscore growing concern within sections of the royal family that prolonged silence could fuel speculation similar to that which surrounded the death of the late Omukama Patrick Matthew David Kaboyo Olimi III nearly three decades ago.

Queen Mother Also Reportedly Receiving Treatment

The reported illness of Omukama Oyo has emerged alongside claims that his mother, Queen Mother Best Kemigisa, has also been in the United States for several months receiving medical treatment.

According to the same palace source, the Queen Mother is reportedly battling a different illness and has occasionally attended medical appointments alongside her son, although each has allegedly been treated by separate teams of doctors for unrelated conditions.

Neither the Queen Mother’s office nor Tooro Kingdom has publicly commented on the reports.

The developments have further heightened concern within the Kingdom, where members of the royal family have faced several health challenges in recent months.

Adding to those concerns is the condition of Prince David Kiijanangoma Araali, a cousin of the King, who has reportedly been undergoing treatment for advanced throat cancer at the Uganda Cancer Institute in Mulago for several months.

Although the three reported illnesses are unrelated, they have intensified public anxiety over the wellbeing of senior members of the Tooro royal family.

A Monarch Who Made History

Born on April 16, 1992, Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV ascended to the throne at the age of just three following the death of his father, Omukama Patrick Matthew David Kaboyo Olimi III, in 1995.

His accession attracted worldwide attention, earning him recognition as the world’s youngest reigning monarch.

Because of his age, the affairs of Tooro Kingdom were initially managed through a regency until he was old enough to assume his constitutional and cultural responsibilities.

He was formally crowned on April 17, 1995, at Karuzika Palace in Fort Portal, an event that symbolized the continuity of one of Uganda’s oldest traditional institutions.

Over the years, the youthful monarch has grown into his role, representing Tooro Kingdom at numerous cultural, educational and international engagements while championing initiatives focused on environmental conservation, youth empowerment, education, tourism and healthcare.

His reign has largely been viewed as one centered on modernization while preserving the cultural heritage and traditions of the Batoro people.

Questions That Never Fully Disappeared

The current reports have also revived memories of the death of the King’s father, Omukama Patrick Matthew David Kaboyo Olimi III.

The late King died suddenly in 1995, shortly after the restoration of Uganda’s traditional kingdoms. His death shocked the Kingdom and generated widespread public speculation because there had been no public indication that he was seriously ill.

Over the years, persistent rumors have circulated alleging that the late monarch may have been poisoned after reportedly experiencing severe stomach pains before his death. Those allegations have never been officially substantiated.

Sources familiar with events at the time say some members of the royal family sought a postmortem examination, while others reportedly opposed the move. As a result, debate surrounding the circumstances of his death has continued for decades, with no publicly available postmortem report ever being released.

Although no official findings have linked the late King’s death to foul play, the unresolved questions continue to shape public discussion whenever health concerns involving members of the royal family emerge.

Tooro Kingdom’s Enduring Legacy

Tooro Kingdom remains one of Uganda’s constitutionally recognized traditional kingdoms, with Fort Portal serving as its cultural and administrative seat.

Founded in the 19th century, the Kingdom has played a central role in preserving the customs, identity and heritage of the Batoro people and neighboring communities in western Uganda.

Like other traditional institutions, the Kingdom was abolished in 1967 under the government of President Milton Obote before being restored in 1993 under President Yoweri Museveni.

The Tooro monarchy traces its leadership through generations of Abakama, including Kaboyo Olimi I, Kazaana Ruhaga, Nyaika Kasunga Kyebambe I, Kato Rukidi I, Mukabirere Olimi II, Mukarusa Kyebambe II, Isingoma Rukidi II, Rubuubi Kyebambe III, Kakende Nyamuyonjo, Katera Rujwenge, Daudi Kasagama Kyebambe IV, George David Kamurasi Rukidi III, Patrick Matthew David Kaboyo Olimi III and the current monarch, Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV.

As the 14th Omukama, Oyo represents the latest chapter in a monarchy whose history stretches across generations and remains deeply woven into the cultural identity of western Uganda.

Awaiting an Official Statement

Despite growing speculation on social media and within royal circles, Karuzika Palace had not issued an official statement by press time addressing the King’s reported hospitalization or confirming the claims surrounding his health.

For many Batoro, the immediate concern extends beyond palace affairs and focuses squarely on the wellbeing of their monarch.

If the reports are officially confirmed, they would represent one of the most significant health challenges to confront the Tooro royal family since the restoration of the Kingdom more than three decades ago.

Until an official communication is issued, uncertainty continues to surround the King’s condition, leaving thousands of subjects, cultural leaders and well-wishers across Uganda and the diaspora waiting for clarity.

Within royal circles, however, one message continues to resonate: prayers for Omukama Oyo as he reportedly undergoes treatment abroad.
