Anita Among To Be Arraigned In Court, DPP Finalizes Her File On These Charges

KAMPALA – Former Speaker of Parliament and Bukedea Woman MP Anita Annet Among is expected to appear before the Anti-Corruption Court this afternoon in what is set to become a significant milestone in Uganda’s ongoing high-profile corruption investigations.

Her expected arraignment follows a series of coordinated security operations carried out in May at properties linked to Among in Kampala and Wakiso districts.

Joint teams of detectives and other security agencies searched the residences and reportedly impounded several luxury vehicles as investigations intensified into allegations of corruption, illicit enrichment, abuse of office and money laundering. Investigators have also been reviewing financial records, electronic devices and property acquisitions associated with the former Speaker.

The investigations are linked to controversial “service awards” reportedly approved for Parliamentary Commissioners in 2022 and 2023.

According to investigators, the payments allegedly ranged between Shs1.4 billion and Shs1.7 billion for each beneficiary, attracting widespread public criticism after Parliament approved them internally. Authorities are examining whether the payments, together with other financial transactions, violated Uganda’s anti-corruption laws.

The case has also drawn international attention. In 2024, the governments of the United Kingdom and the United States imposed sanctions on Among over allegations of significant corruption, including travel restrictions and asset freezes under their respective anti-corruption frameworks.

The May security raids sparked intense political debate, with reports indicating that several of Among’s former political allies distanced themselves as the investigations gathered momentum. The searches and expected prosecution have been widely viewed as one of the most consequential anti-corruption actions involving a senior Ugandan political figure in recent years.

By publication time, prosecutors had not officially disclosed the specific charges that Among is expected to answer before the Anti-Corruption Court. Court proceedings later today are expected to provide the first official details of the charges and the prosecution’s case.
