Inside Anita Among’s Shs42m Designer Dress That Set Ugandans Talking At M7 Swearing In

Uganda’s Speaker of Parliament, Anita Annet Among, has once again become the center of intense public debate after appearing at President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni’s swearing-in ceremony in what fashion observers described as a high-end designer outfit valued at more than Shs42 million.

The Speaker’s appearance at the nationally televised state event quickly drew attention online, with social media users, fashion enthusiasts, and political commentators widely sharing photos and breakdowns of the attire she wore during the ceremony.

According to online fashion analysts, Anita Among arrived at the function dressed in a luxury Oscar de la Renta Porcelain Flower embroidered outfit believed to have been sourced from the renowned international fashion house’s official collection.

Reports circulating online indicated that the ensemble allegedly included a designer dress priced at about $6,490 USD, estimated at roughly Shs24 million, alongside a matching embroidered jacket said to cost approximately $4,990 USD, translating to nearly Shs18.5 million.

In total, the outfit was estimated at around $11,480 USD before taxes, shipping, and other related expenses — a figure that converts to nearly Shs42.5 million.

Images of the Speaker’s appearance rapidly spread across Facebook, X, TikTok, and other social media platforms, sparking heated reactions from Ugandans divided over the display of luxury at a time when many citizens continue to grapple with economic hardship and rising living costs.

Some online users praised Anita Among for what they described as elegance, class, and confidence during one of the country’s most significant state occasions. Supporters argued that public officials are entitled to personal fashion preferences and should not be condemned solely based on how they choose to dress.

Others, however, questioned the timing and symbolism of such expensive fashion statements, especially amid ongoing public criticism regarding government expenditure, corruption allegations, and concerns over the widening gap between political elites and ordinary Ugandans.

The latest discussion has further intensified public scrutiny surrounding the lifestyles of senior government officials, with many citizens increasingly using social media platforms to demand accountability and transparency from political leaders perceived to be living lavishly.

The controversy also emerges at a politically sensitive moment for the Speaker, who has recently faced backlash over reports linking her to the purchase of a Rolls-Royce reportedly valued at approximately Shs3.7 billion.

Critics have continued to question the source of wealth behind the extravagant spending, with some connecting the luxury purchases to corruption scandals and allegations that have in recent months dominated political conversations surrounding Parliament.

Despite the criticism, supporters of the Speaker insist that her private spending choices should not overshadow her role in Parliament or the responsibilities attached to her office.

President Museveni’s swearing-in ceremony attracted several high-profile guests, including senior government officials, diplomats, religious leaders, celebrities, and invited dignitaries, making it one of the country’s most closely followed national events.
