Just in: Busoga elders rally NUP to consider Kaluya for Commissioner job

A section of elders in Busoga have appealed to the opposition National Unity Platform party to consider their Secretary for mobilization Andrew Kiiza Kaluya for the Commissioner slot, citing the need to do some regional balance.

The elders opine that since Busoga has been a formidable force in amplifying the NUP liberation agenda, they too deserve to be on the dining table of Makerere Kavule.

“We also need a voice in the top parliamentary slots. We understand this is not the best way and time to have this debate but we should be ready for the good news from our party,” Isabirye Noah, an opinion leader in Iganga states. “We rejected NRM for sidelining our daughter Rebecca Kadaga whom has been fought by her own party despite having incurred a lot of sacrifices. We don’t wish to see NUP sidelining our son Andrew Kaluya. We credit the 8 legislative victories to him because he has been the chief mobilizer in the Eastern region,” added another Busoga elder who identified himself as Tenywa Alex.

The Parliamentary Commissioner debate is gaining public traction with political pundits waiting to see if the lucrative position will be retained in Buganda. At the inception of the 2021 tenure, the slot was given to Mityana Municipality MP Zaake Francis Butebi who was eventually impeached by fellow lawmakers on disciplinary grounds. He was later succeeded by the embattled Nyendo Mukungwe MP Mathias Mpuuga Nsamba who stubbornly retained the seat despite being recalled by his appointing authority (NUP).

By press time, the Kigulu South MP elect Andrew Kaluya was not available to comment on the contentious debate. Our efforts to also retrieve a comment from Makerere Kavule were futile as the party spokesperson also Leader of the Opposition Rt. Hon. Joel Ssenyonyi was not available for a comment perhaps due to his attendance of the Dr. Kizza Besigye prayers at Lubaga cathedral.
