Karamoja Peace and Technology University Launch Ignites a New Dawn for the Karamoja Region
The launch of the Karamoja Peace and Technology University (KAPATU) turned Losilang in Kotido Municipality into a centre of celebration, drawing thousands of excited residents and leaders from across the region. For a community that has endured years of conflict, poverty, and limited educational options, the unveiling of this university signaled a powerful shift toward hope, stability, and long-term development.
Representing President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, former Prime Minister John Patrick Amama Mbabazi delivered a reassuring message, emphasizing government’s commitment to fully support the new institution. His presence showed the country’s confidence in KAPATU as a key driver of peace and progress in the Karamoja sub-region.
The creation of KAPATU responds to decades of challenges—cattle raids, hunger, poor access to social services, and a shortage of practical skills among the youth. The university plans to train students in peacebuilding, technology, human rights, and other modern fields designed to rebuild communities and reduce cycles of violence. Its mission is to shape a new generation equipped with knowledge, discipline, and the ability to lead meaningful change.
Regional leaders expressed strong support during the launch. Hon. Loki Peter Abrahams said the university would help unite communities and speed up government development programs. He urged the government to strengthen free primary education, ensuring every child in Karamoja has a strong foundation before joining institutions like KAPATU.
Kotido District Chairperson, Lote Paul, praised President Museveni and international partners, especially the Ethiopian government, for backing the project. He described the university as a major step toward replacing conflict with opportunity, offering young people a chance to build better futures through education instead of violence.
While delivering the President’s message, Rt. Hon. Mbabazi announced that government will handle the university’s daily operational costs. He highlighted education as a powerful force for breaking poverty and restoring peace, noting that KAPATU will serve as a cornerstone for stability and growth across the entire Karamoja region.
A memorable moment came when President Museveni expressed willingness to forgive and reintegrate karachunas who had been arrested for taking part in insecurity. He encouraged them to take advantage of the university to rebuild their lives, stressing that the focus now is on healing, learning, and community renewal rather than punishment.
As the event ended, residents spoke with excitement about the future. Many felt the university would reduce long travel for higher education, boost local business activity, and give young people new dreams to pursue. With its launch, the Karamoja Peace and Technology University has become more than an academic institution—it has become a symbol of hope, resilience, and a new beginning for a region ready to rise.
