Mbale Heroes Face Looming Threat of Administration Amid Turmoil On and Off the Field
Mbale Heroes, a club with a celebrated history in Ugandan football, is facing an unprecedented crisis that could see it placed into administration under FUFA regulations. The team’s struggles have been both on the pitch and in the boardroom, raising serious concerns about its immediate future.
On-Field Struggles Highlight Deep Issues
After a 17-year hiatus, Mbale Heroes made a triumphant return to the Uganda Premier League last season, only to be relegated immediately. Their return to the FUFA Big League has done little to restore stability. Currently, the club sits perilously in the relegation zone, accumulating just seven points from 24 possible.
The depth of the crisis was laid bare during a recent home defeat to Bright Stars, where the team could field only nine outfield players and lacked a licensed goalkeeper. Defender Abraham Okello was forced to man the goal—a striking illustration of a squad stretched to the breaking point.
Leadership Vacuum Exacerbates the Problem
The club’s internal chaos has been compounded by instability at the top. Chairman Andrew Wambi and his executive team resigned, leaving the club’s patron, Hon. Nathan Nandala Mafabi, who is reportedly focused on his presidential ambitions, to oversee operations. While his sister Jessica Muduwa and legal counsel Geoffrey Odur Ojok have attempted to provide stability, gaps in leadership remain evident.
Acting CEO Bosco Wamududa admitted that internal disagreements and injuries contributed to the depleted lineup. “Some senior players were unavailable due to internal differences and injuries,” Wamududa explained. “That’s why we had a smaller squad than usual.”
Financial Struggles Threaten Survival
Off-field financial woes are at the root of the club’s difficulties. Several licensed players, including Paul Musamali, Cosia Waiswa, and Peter Ssenkungu, did not report for duty, with rumors suggesting some may have left the country. Meanwhile, younger players and loanees from Bul FC were unavailable due to national exams, further limiting squad options.
Counsel Ojok did not shy away from the severity of the financial situation. “We are doing all we can, but the truth is that the club is struggling financially,” he admitted, emphasizing the urgent need for restructuring and sustainable management.
FUFA Regulations Could See Heroes in Administration
Under FUFA regulations, a club facing severe financial strain may be placed into administration, with the federation temporarily assuming control until new ownership is secured or the current owners can stabilize the club. If unresolved, FUFA could revoke the club’s Certificate of Ownership entirely—an unprecedented move that could set a new precedent in Ugandan football.
As Mbale Heroes prepare for their upcoming away match against Kaaro Karungi, all eyes will be on whether the club can stabilize both on and off the pitch, or if they will become the first team to test FUFA’s administration regulations in practice.
