Breaking!! Museveni Minister Musa Ecweru Steps Down from Amuria County MP Race, See Why

In a dramatic turn of events that has sent ripples through the political corridors of Teso, the State Minister for Works and Transport, Hon. Musa Ecweru, has officially bowed out of the Amuria County Parliamentary race.

The veteran politician and long-serving minister announced his withdrawal in what many have described as a selfless and patriotic gesture aimed at promoting harmony within the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) and bolstering President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni’s re-election campaign.

By 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday morning, November 11, 2025, the atmosphere in Amuria Town Council was charged with emotion. Hundreds of NRM supporters thronged the party offices, eagerly waiting to hear the official confirmation of their minister’s decision.

Many appeared visibly shaken — some wiping away tears — as Ecweru’s agents arrived carrying the official withdrawal letter. The letter, a symbol of political sacrifice, was submitted to the Electoral Commission’s local office amid murmurs of disbelief and mixed emotions.

Hon. Ecweru, who had earlier opted to run as an independent candidate after losing the NRM flag to his long-time political rival and former UPC member turned NRM flag bearer, Samuel Ediau, later addressed journalists and supporters. Speaking in his trademark calm and measured tone, he explained that his decision was not one of defeat, but of principle, unity, and loyalty to the party.

“We may have our individual differences, but we can’t allow them to affect the President and the NRM party,” Ecweru said, addressing journalists and supporters. “This decision was not easy, but I believe it is the right one for our country and our party.”

The minister’s words were met with nods of approval and quiet applause from the crowd. Many supporters who had come expecting a defiant stance were instead moved by what they saw as an act of humility and statesmanship.

Soon after his speech, Ecweru’s official agent, Mr. Okiror Nathan, formally presented the withdrawal letter to the Amuria District Registrar, Mr. Othieno Daniel Kiracho, on behalf of the minister. The registrar, acknowledging receipt of the document, described it as “a lawful and timely decision” made in full compliance with the Electoral Commission’s campaign guidelines.

Witnesses to the handover erupted in spontaneous applause, describing Ecweru’s move as “a mark of selflessness and political maturity.” One elderly supporter remarked that the minister’s decision had restored her faith in politics, calling it “a moment of truth and courage rarely seen in today’s political climate.”

In his remarks to the press, Hon. Ecweru reaffirmed his unwavering loyalty to both the NRM and President Museveni. He declared that he would now devote his energy to mobilizing support for the President’s 2026 re-election bid and for all NRM candidates across Teso and beyond.

“It doesn’t affect the country when I lose a seat,” he said. “But the country could be destabilized if President Museveni loses the presidential race. I have therefore stepped down to mobilize for the President and to protect the peace and stability we have achieved under his leadership.”

Ecweru also extended an olive branch to his former rival, pledging total support for Samuel Ediau, the NRM flag bearer for Amuria County. He promised to work hand-in-hand with Ediau and other party leaders to strengthen the NRM’s structures at the grassroots.

“I will support the NRM flag bearers to strengthen unity and the party’s base,” he stated, drawing fresh applause and chants of “NRM oyee!” from his supporters.

Before his withdrawal, Hon. Ecweru had been serving as the NRM Chairman for Amuria District, a position he voluntarily relinquished earlier in the year after the party directed all independent candidates holding leadership roles to step aside. His compliance with that directive had already earned him respect among party loyalists.

Political analysts have since weighed in on Ecweru’s latest move, describing it as a turning point for the NRM in Amuria County. According to them, the minister’s gesture demonstrates rare political discipline and a deep understanding of party ideology — qualities that could help mend the rifts that had developed within the district’s NRM structures in previous elections.

Many observers believe that by choosing unity over rivalry, Ecweru has reinvigorated the NRM’s chances of reclaiming full dominance in Amuria and perhaps inspired other leaders to put the party’s interests before personal ambition.

As the dust settles, Hon. Musa Ecweru’s withdrawal is being viewed not as an exit, but as a strategic repositioning — a move that underscores his continued influence and commitment to the ruling party’s broader vision. His decision, widely interpreted as a gesture of loyalty and foresight, could reshape the political dynamics of Amuria County and signal a new era of cooperation within the NRM.

In the words of one supporter, “He may have stepped down from the race, but he has stepped up as a true leader.”
