Egypt Pledges $100 Million Investment to Support Nile Basin Countries in Hydropower Development
The Egyptian government has announced its commitment to assist Nile Basin countries, including Uganda, in the development of hydropower dams along the Nile River.
This pledge was made by Egypt’s Minister of Water, Professor Hani Sewilam, during the grand opening of the $1 billion Egyptian Grand Museum in Cairo, an event attended by world leaders and high-profile dignitaries. The museum was inaugurated under the theme: Celebrating Egypt’s Ancient Civilizations.
Speaking to hundreds of guests, Sewilam confirmed that Egypt is ready to invest $100 million (approximately Shs360 billion) to support hydropower projects in the Nile Basin region.
Uganda’s Prime Minister, Robinah Nabbanja, represented President Yoweri Museveni, who is currently traveling the country ahead of his re-election campaign. Nabbanja held bilateral discussions with Prof. Sewilam in Cairo, accompanied by her delegation, including Uganda’s Deputy Ambassador to Egypt, Lt. Gen. Charles Angina.
During the talks, Nabbanja expressed gratitude to Egypt for its planned support to Nile Basin countries but also urged that environmental preservation along the Nile be prioritized in all development projects.
Meanwhile, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi highlighted the significance of the museum opening, stating that Egypt is entering a new era in its historical and cultural journey. “Today we celebrate the opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum and embark on a new chapter in both our history and future,” he said.
The $1 billion museum will open its doors to the public next week, offering visitors access to its extensive galleries and exhibitions, showcasing Egypt’s rich heritage.
