Police Arrests More Than 30 NUP Supporters For Welcoming Bobi Wine To Mityana Like A King
Police have confirmed the arrest of 29 supporters of the National Unity Platform (NUP) who allegedly blocked the Mityana highway ahead of party leader and presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu’s planned rally in Mityana District.
According to a statement issued by Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Patrick Onyango, the incident occurred on Monday at Bujjuko Trading Centre when a group of NUP supporters gathered along the highway, drumming, whistling, and blocking traffic as they waited for Kyagulanyi’s motorcade.
“Security personnel issued warnings, but the group persisted, leading to the arrest of about 29 suspects who are currently held at Wakiso Police Division,” Onyango said.
Police said Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine, had been expected to use the Mityana highway en route to his campaign venue but instead chose to travel via Hoima Road.
The security forces had reportedly arranged a joint deployment along both routes to facilitate the candidate’s movement.

The statement added that the group’s actions caused “disruption of traffic flow and incited unrest by blocking roads.”
Police have urged all presidential candidates and their supporters to comply with traffic regulations, adhere to approved route plans, and respect the rights of other road users during the ongoing campaign season.
By press time, NUP officials had not yet commented on the arrests, though the opposition party has frequently accused security agencies of targeting its supporters during campaign activities.
The incident marks yet another standoff between security forces and NUP supporters as tensions rise ahead of the 2026 general elections.
