SAD!! Several Injured In Accident Involving NUP’s Bobi Wine En Route To Jinja

What began as a routine day on the campaign trail took a dangerous turn on Saturday morning when a road accident involving the convoy of National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential hopeful Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, widely known as Bobi Wine, left at least seven people injured.

The crash occurred around 11:30 a.m. in Namyoya Village, along the busy Nakifuma–Kayunga road. Bobi Wine and his team were traveling from Kalagi to Kayunga, continuing their countrywide mobilization efforts ahead of the 2026 elections. Just after wrapping up a rally in Kalagi, the convoy ran into trouble.

According to police, the incident started when a speeding motorcycle crashed into another vehicle. That collision triggered a chain reaction, with several other motorcycles—part of Bobi Wine’s escort—slamming into each other.

In the middle of the commotion, a white Mitsubishi Rosa minibus with campaign posters and registration number UAZ 064H lost control and crashed into the pileup of motorcycles. The result was a chaotic scene, with injured individuals sprawled on the road.

Among those hurt were Kewanza Bashir (27), Kakaire Bashir (35), Ssepereza Musa (40), Kisomba Micheal (28), Ssewaya Eric (23), and Mutagubya Robert (24). They were quickly transported to St. Francis Naggalama Hospital for emergency medical care.

Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic as supporters tried to rescue the injured and call for help.

Several motorcycles involved in the crash were identified by their registration numbers: UFQ 569H, UGH 892B, UEK 351T, and UFQ 250Q. All were red Bajaj Boxers, commonly used by boda-boda riders. The damaged motorcycles and the minibus were later towed to the Naggalama Police Yard for inspection as part of an ongoing investigation.

Addressing the media, Senior Superintendent of Police Patrick Onyango, spokesperson for Kampala Metropolitan Police, said the accident appeared to be the result of careless driving.

“Police continue to investigate the incident, but preliminary findings point to reckless behavior on the road. We appeal to motorists and cyclists, especially during campaign activities, to prioritize road safety,” Onyango said.

He highlighted the dangers that often come with political events, where large convoys and excited supporters tend to overcrowd narrow roads. Onyango urged both drivers and motorcyclists to strictly follow traffic rules to avoid similar incidents in the future.

The crash comes at a time of growing political activity as Uganda heads toward the 2026 general elections. Kyagulanyi, a well-known opposition figure and former MP, has been actively touring different regions to strengthen his party’s presence at the grassroots level.

Although Bobi Wine’s team has not released an official comment on the accident, NUP supporters have voiced concerns about safety during campaign events, especially in areas where road conditions are poor and emergency services may be limited.

As authorities continue to investigate, the incident serves as a reminder of the potential dangers on the campaign trail. With political enthusiasm running high, ensuring the safety of both participants and bystanders remains a crucial priority moving forward.
