Kiruluuta Yusuf JNR Nkeretanyi Emerges as Strong Contender for NUP Flag in Kalungu East
Kalungu, Uganda — As the political climate in Kalungu East heats up ahead of the 2026 general elections, one name is generating increasing excitement and support among locals and party loyalists alike — Kiruluuta Yusuf JNR Nkeretanyi. Widely seen as the frontrunner to carry the National Unity Platform (NUP) flag in the constituency, Kiruluuta’s growing popularity is shifting the political dynamics in the region.
With deep roots in Kalungu, Kiruluuta is not just a familiar face — he is a homegrown figure whose strong ties to the area have earned him significant grassroots support. Born and raised in Kalungu, his connection to the community goes beyond politics. Over the years, he has built a reputation as a generous and development-focused leader who invests directly in the people.
One of the key pillars of his growing support base is his work with youth empowerment. Kiruluuta has employed numerous young people within the district and facilitated opportunities for many others abroad. Through his initiatives, several youths from Kalungu have found work in foreign countries, offering them a chance to improve their livelihoods and support their families back home. This commitment to creating opportunities for the younger generation has earned him admiration across the constituency.
Moreover, Kiruluuta enjoys a unique political and cultural advantage — his strong relationship with the Buganda Kingdom. As a respected figure within Buganda circles, he commands considerable influence and legitimacy among the Baganda population in Kalungu East. This alliance with traditional leadership structures further enhances his appeal, particularly in a region where cultural identity remains politically significant.
Within the National Unity Platform itself, Kiruluuta’s campaign is gaining momentum due to what many see as a growing disconnect between the electorate and the incumbent MP, Katabaazi. While Katabaazi has served in the current Parliament, local NUP supporters increasingly express dissatisfaction with his performance and engagement. Critics argue that his visibility and energy have waned, and that he no longer resonates with the party’s youthful, activist-driven spirit that has come to define NUP.
“People want a leader who is with them on the ground, who feels their struggles and moves with them. Yusuf is that leader,” said Mariam Nakabugo, a youth leader in Kalungu East.
Indeed, Kiruluuta’s groundwork is unmatched, according to political observers in the district. He has maintained a consistent presence in villages and trading centers, meeting with elders, women’s groups, boda boda riders, and youth organizations. His door-to-door mobilization style and community-first approach have placed him ahead of his competitors in terms of visibility and support.
As the NUP prepares for its internal primaries, all signs point to Kiruluuta Yusuf JNR Nkeretanyi being the leading candidate to secure the party’s endorsement. With his strong local support, youth-focused agenda, and cultural alliances, his bid for Member of Parliament in Kalungu East could mark a significant shift in the constituency’s political future.
