BIG STORY!! UPDF Medical Officers Demand Fair Pay and Implementation of Delayed Salary Increments

Medical officers in the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) have voiced frustration over low salaries and the repeated failure to implement promised pay increases. Despite working under challenging conditions, they say they have been overlooked, even as their counterparts in the police, prisons, local government, and civilian health sectors have received their salary adjustments.

The medics report having followed all official procedures, including lodging complaints with the Anti-Corruption Unit at State House, but their concerns remain largely unaddressed. Some officers allege facing intimidation, including threats of arrest if identified as whistleblowers. They emphasize that their dedication and sacrifices in combat roles make them equally deserving of the pay adjustments.

According to the officers, the Ministry of Health released funds to the Ministry of Defense to cover the salary increments, but implementation has stalled. They also raise concerns over repeated delays in issuing practicing licenses, essential for their professional duties. While previous interventions by officials such as Edith Nakalema produced results, recent efforts have achieved little progress.

The medics note that government-approved salary increases from past budgets, including 2018-2019 and 2021-2022, have yet to benefit UPDF medical staff. They are appealing directly to the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) and the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defense to ensure fairness, payment of arrears, and recognition of their equal status among medical professionals in Uganda.

Their plea highlights the urgent need for equity, transparency, and acknowledgment of the contributions of frontline military health workers who continue to serve under demanding conditions.
